Doesn't the Royal Bank of Scotland have to have the equivalent pounds sterling in actual cash deposited with the Bank of England. Then they can print their own notes. Each note is then guaranteed by a similar value Sterling note?

As for a currency union like the EU, it is far too early to see if it is working properly. It took about 100 years from the USA declaration of independance before the economies of all the remote parts of the union became economically aligned. Before then somewhere like California would have been beter off by having its own currency.

The Bank of England would be my guess? It's on every note.

Blair Jenkins is the chief executive of the Yes campaign and there are 4 political parties on the advisory board led by a former labour MP. Blair Jenkins is not a member of any political party and was a former director of a television broadcasting company. Alex Salmond is not the epitome of the yes campaign although the media, politicians and the SNP would have you believe that he is.

He in all probability would not be the first minister elected after the September vote, so his and the SNP’s strategy document is worth little more than toilet paper.

Read the September Referendum Question again:

“Should Scotland be an independent country?”

If your statement is accurate then Alex Salmond is correct that we in Scotland do not therefore share your debt!!

You can’t have it both ways.

Only David if you return all the other entities that you have stolen from us over the past 307 years and then claimed to be yours.

By the way in Scotland we have three major banks, or should I say that we had three major banks, before two, ‘The Royal Bank of Scotland’ and the ‘Bank of Scotland’ were taken over by the English and the ‘Clydesdale Bank’ which was taken over by the Australian’s, along with the ‘Yorkshire Bank’.

All by the way are legally allowed to issue their own bank notes.

'Claimed to be yours'? Shouldn't that be 'claimed to be ours'?

When it comes to shared assets and debts then upon separation you cannot pick and choose which items you want to keep and which to leave behind. The oil is a UK asset and the debt is a UK debt. If you want the oil then take a share of the debt too. Anyway, what happens if the Shetlands decide that they want to stay as part of the UK?

Are you sure about that? They are equidistant from Aberdeen and Norway and don't feel any affinity to Edinburgh. They may see this as their chance to assert their own independence.

Is this an assumption or do you know this as fact?

I have relatives in Lerwick and Yell and they don’t agree with you.

You must not believe all that the media feeds you.

Crumbs! and other expletives! I make an innocent comment about holiday plans and Scotland and get a) blamed for ITWA developing it into an independence debate, and b) I find a load of nebulous arguments. To put the record straight from my side, I worked for several years as the only Englishman on a Scottish ship, and I loved every minute of it, and several of them are still my friends. It will be very sad for me, if a great and homogenous grouping of nations is split up, by those who to me look typical of the type of Scot who revel in 'English Baiting'. Rather than ponting out the perils to them, we should just laugh and say "wahtever!"

Back to the holidays; after our week on the Oceana, we take back all we thought about P&O. Oceana was great (small bathroom excepted), food great, entertainment great, crew great, table companions good fun....etc., etc. I am going to write a brief cruise report elsewhere. We are now looking forward to the next one.

Sorry Frank, you've done it again! First you turn a cruising thread into a political debate.

Now the Modplods have separated the thread into two strands you're trying to turn the political debate back to cruising!

Will you never learn?

Next we'll have Salmond debating the virtues of P&O versus Fred Olsen

We can always choose the ship he doesn't.

Anyway if Scotland gets independence he might not get a visa to travel to Southampton.

Too late I spotted the resurrection of this thread!!

I have heard, from the only Conservative MP in Scotland, that Alex Salmond has been in touch with P&O/Carnival to see if they would be interested in buying the ‘Trident Subs’, from Faslane on the Gare Loch, after September. This would allow P&O to sneak in and out of Venice without being seen. :D :D

Well I could be offended since he called the Isle of Wight the Isle of White. I suppose I could just accept it if he was alluding to the once famous and best builder of RN warships John Samuel White.

Won't be much good John, batty one tells us that the depth of the lagoon channel is only about 10m which is not quite enough for them to slide in unnoticed.

Well if Scots are daft enough to vote for a party that can never get a majority at Westminster, that may be why they feel under-represented.

Perhaps if Mr Salmond really wanted Scotland to have a bigger say in the UK he should encourage people to vote Conservative or Labour!

Just so long as we don't get another Scottish MP as Chancellor/PM intent on bankrupting us!

Now there's a thought. That couldn't happen if you all vote Yes. I'm just starting to see the advantages of independence for England. Up till now I thought we'd all be worse off in Scotland and the rest of the UK.

Now there's a plan. Mind you, I've heard their balcony cabins are prone to damp. :?
