Huge thanks to everyone for nice messages and support.

Today things are improving and I've even been allowed a cuddle - which was wonderful.

Onwards and upwards!

So pleased to hear Amelia Jane is improving. I will be thinking about you and your family.

Em, It has probably been very hard for you the last few days. Your first cuddle with Amelia Jane would be very special for you and once she is home the last few days will be forgotten. Your picture of her is lovely, now you can start being a real Grandma.

Hey - I've just had a really daft thought - I suppose I am now a 'granny in training' ........ so does that make me a 'G I T'? Answers on a postcard please.

No training necessary - Grannys, and Granddads, are straight in there without any instruction book - apart from the 1001 rules issued by the parents (it's OK - you can ignore 999 of them  )

Hi Sue,

I have a strange feeling that if I did that (not that you are doing anything 'wrong'), then my son-in-law (if he found out) would 'exclude' us from our granddaughter's life.

Don't get me wrong, I stick to baby routines and specific dietary rules, etc, but bedtime times especially at holidays etc..go a to bit astray.
Grandads the worst...goes for his Sunday papers and the boys always know they get some sweets of their choice.
We don't always eat at the table...we all have trays on our knees... :o for movie night.
The kids know, this only happens at our house.

Hi Sue,

That's a nice normal lifestyle - absolutely nothing wrong in that at all. However, what I 'thought' a grandparent 'could' do and what son-in-law thinks are poles apart, and at the moment he isn't showing any signs of yielding in the slightest. He has set his rules, and that's that - I dread to think how he would react if we ever got caught slightly bending those rules!

What's the whole thing got to do with us anyway - we're only the parents of the new mum.

Dear Em - you will have a very special relationship with your Amelia and mustn't take too much notice of the "rules" laid down by the parents - they have probably been reading those flippin child care books written by people who have never had children  I don't suggest for a moment going against their wishes as this will cause problems but you will be surprised how they come round to some of your views - after all we do have more experience

I have two sons and so have always been very careful not to upset the daughters in law - it's not worth the hassle.

My grandchildren have all grown up into delightful boys and girls who have given me so much joy but one thing I learnt from day 1 was to choose carefully what I say and do - I'm all for a peaceful life

Hi Jan,

They are on their way home I believe, but I am already (as you said from day 1) getting in a lot of practice at biting my tongue!

Hi DtM,

Now then - I might have said 'I don't have any children' meaning that I don't have 'children' (plural); however, I don't truly think that I have ever denied my daughter's existence.

Honest.

Em,

If they are on their way home that means Amelia Jane has made a good recovery. That is a positive thing. Because of the circumstances you have missed out on those first few special hours but hopefully it won't be long before you are playing a bigger role in her life.

Our twins were born over 10 weeks prematurely almost 30 years ago; that indeed was a very worrying situation back them when medical practice was not as advanced as it is now. Cuddles were not even on the agenda for many weeks whilst they were in SCBU, and then in a hot room for further weeks.

DTM, I remember a comment in that vein too. ;)

Count yourself lucky, Boris.

Well that must have been absolutely horrendous Wolfie, and that sort of situation calls for a special type of 'bravery' (for want of a better word).

So, the baby is now home, home coming gifts duly done and dusted, and today I'm hopefully going to collect mine - (we sorted out a gift for the baby, one for our daughter, and then something for me to celebrate being a granny).

Hi Meg,

It's a bit of a girl thing - me, my daughter and her daughter; and it is something which was my late mother's wish.

Hi Keith,

Like so many new grannies before me, I've had my first albeit brief and indoor try out of the pram today. L plates are a must!
