Death Penalty?
Err, doesn't matter whether you are for or against the death penalty, but as we are apparently able to put an animal as big as an elephant down without causing any distress, I wonder why the US can't do the same?

Death Penalty?
Do elephants do drugs? Drug use is suggested as one reason for his veins to collapse. However it's done it seems quite barbaric but so was his treatment of the poor victim.lioness wrote:Err, doesn't matter whether you are for or against the death penalty, but as we are apparently able to put an animal as big as an elephant down without causing any distress, I wonder why the US can't do the same?

I wonder why the US Dept. of justice don't outsource this service to Dignitas, they seem able to help patients to die quite painlessly.

The Death Penalty is quite an emotive subject, but, if there is no doubt whatsoever about the verdict, why should these evil people have a very easy death, when you find out just what they have put their victims through??
Only my opinion.

Maybe the method of execution should be the same as the one the murderer used on his victim?

I can't help but wonder, if criminals knew that the administration of the death penalty might be 'painful' - would they still commit as many crimes, or such bad crimes?
In this particular case, the media reported that the administration of the death penalty had failed ...... well no, he was still dead; and considering what he did that's fine by me.
Just my opinion.

Re: Death Penalty?
I only caught a bit of this on the news the other night so wasn't aware of what the crime was until I clicked on Onelife's link.
It is a very emotive subject but I stand on the side of saying .... he got no less than he deserved, that poor girl must have suffered far more than he did.

Actually that wasn't my question, but perhaps I should have worded it differently. I am just gobsmacked that the US cannot administer a lethal injection effectively. I'm sure their vets do it every day!!

in response to the OP
does it matter how it is done? and does it matter if the person being executed suffers?

This isn't the first time there has been a cock up administering the lethal injection and one has to ask the question how much Dr Death gets paid for prolonging the experience......if l was a relative of this poor girl l would happily bunged the doctor a few quid.

Yes that's possible, but they administer a sedative first, then when that takes hold, bung in 2 more drugs that they apparently buy from abroad?
The stuff the vets use is one drug and does the job straight away. Very odd.

That's probably so that it is done in a controlled way that does not impinge their human rightslioness wrote:Yes that's possible, but they administer a sedative first, then when that takes hold, bung in 2 more drugs that they apparently buy from abroad?

From memory, they have had to change the drugs used, as the previous drug manufacturers refused to continue supplying the US for use in state-endorsed killing.lioness wrote:Actually that wasn't my question, but perhaps I should have worded it differently. I seem to be the only poster who disapproves of the whole ghastly business. And no, I don't like what he did any more than the rest of you.

Re: Death Penalty?
I suppose if we are going to debate their 'human rights' - what about the human rights of the victims?
Surely it would be far 'kinder' to these rapists and murderers to apply the death sentence much more quickly and not have these guilty murderers and rapists hanging about on death row.
Look at the positives - less stress for their families (financially and otherwise), less cost for the tax payer, and above all less stress for the family of the victims.
I think that this situation with drug companies is just an excuse - if the prisoner has been sedated then what's wrong with a bullet to the head - it's quick and simple and apparently guns and bullets are easily available in the USA.

Re: Death Penalty?
The strange thing in the USA is that if the defendant agrees to plead guilty he can generally be given a life sentence. So only those who think their lawyers can get them off, or the genuinely innocent go to a jury trial.
Makes me wonder how many innocents are found guilty and end up with a death penalty.

Re: Death Penalty?
I have never understood why prisoners are kept on 'death row' for 15 years or so. As long as they have been proven guilty why keep them alive.
I have always been apprehensive about the death penalty but with todays forensic evidence criminals can be found guilty years after their crimes have been committed.
There can be no closure for the families concerned until they can be satisfied justice had been done.
Lioness, As usual the post has been diverted. Reading the latest news if seems as it was a complete c up.

Which is why i don't support capital punishment. Fine if you could guarantee with 100% certainty that they were guilty of henious crimes.towny44 wrote:The strange thing in the USA is that if the defendant agrees to plead guilty he can generally be given a life sentence. then what about degrees of murder. do you kill someone who murdered their loved one because they were terminally ill and in excrutiating pain?

but why bother sedating if you're going to inject a lump of pointy steel at high velocity?
