Site slowing down and timing out.

Unread post by towny44 »

Anyone else having problems with the site, not sure if its my connection which also seems a bit funny today, maybe its the weather.

No problem with speed but, since we moved host, there is an enforced delay between posts. If you try to post a reply straight after a previous one, a pretty red banner with "You cannot make another post so soon after your last." pops up.

What's that all about ?

It is to stop "spamming" - you have to wait 60 seconds to make the next post in a topic. On the basis that nobody can type that fast it should not be a problem

I've seen the message numerous times!

And again! It stops posts on different threads too!

Towny, I am inclined to think the problem is your connection, it is fairly whizzing along for me.
If continues to give a problem then try clearing out your cache, cookies etc.
Let us know if there are any other issues

Ken, Yes the problem was my connection the wind, thats meteorological not flatulence, was creating havoc with my connection. I am having Sky check out if there is an external line problem, but I have little faith in BT Openreach resolving it quickly.

I hate it when you have to rely on two companies working together ... I have experienced Sky and BT collaborative working in the past ... and it seems to boil down to weeks of them blaming each other and nothing happening followed by several visits to the house until someone realises the problem is at the exchange.

The best one was a mate of mine who could not get a speed of more than 512Kb on his broadband despite his neighhbours getting up to 8Mb. He tried BT who told him nothing was wrong, in the end, to stop BT an dthe internet provider playing the blame game he moved his internet to BT. It was the 5th engineer that came out that spotted that his line (for some reason) had been capped at 512Kb at the exchange ... the engineer removed the cap and instantly he got 8Mb.

It's a very tricky area but I agree that BT vs Anybody is a very bad idea, for this very reason we have BT.

The problem arises when it is your own fault or if your PC is miles from the Master Socket ... and beware of failing Modems, get a spare one on e-Bay for a few £££s is my advice.
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

I moved to Virgin Media for a number of reasons. Download 32Mb/s, upload 12Mb/s and that's on my ipad. The PCs are even faster. :)

We do have Virgin available in our area and its something I have considered, but Sky Talk gives me free 24/7 national calls plus some free international
calls, including Canada where my SIL lives, and we do watch quite a lot of Sky Atlantic programmes which are only available on Sky; and although we normally only get 3-4 mb download speeds from our Sky broadband it is generally enough for our needs.

I think that you have to careful when talking about download/upload speeds as no matter what speed you can get from the exchange you are ultimately governed, when using the Internet, by the slowest link in the chain
