I have just viewed, perhaps overly slanted, Panorama programe of care homes for the "oldies"

I have devious plan

If and when I need care and attention

I am taking a bleedy gert carving knife

To are village bank, and scream, had over the till

Get rightfully arrested

Plead guilty my lord

Get six years, with three meals a day, a warm shower every morning. plus freshly laundered knickers, multi channeled HD TV, and games

And visits from the kiddywinks every other week

Dear Julian on BBC Solent has started another little 'stir up session' this morning about rationing health care for the elderly. What with that and his 'should we stop the elderly from driving' a while back, perhaps a few of us should start to watch out. It isn't an enormous step from that, before they introduce compulsory euthanasia for the elderly. So best put the carving knife away for a while Cerne Giant, they could also enact Sharia Law while you are awaiting sentencing!

Panorama is a great programe, but they do tend to cherry pick to make a major impact with their investigative programs

Whilst the contents of this week's transmission were horrifying

This particular report was positive and the perpetrators where taken to task and severely dealt with

In my opinion

The majority of Nursing Homes are par excellent

My problem with these establishments are the eye watering charges, a life times savings can used up in charges within a few months

By way of an update . . . I am coping very well without Betty, my boy scout badges have been dusted and I am fully "Be Prepared" to tackle most house hold chores

I think there are very few care homes that are perfect. There is nowhere like your own home. Colin was in hospital over Christmas and New Year and I was told that, if I didn't move to a smaller place near to my son and family then Colin would have to go into full time care. There is no way I would agree to this but he was kept in hospital until I, with help from daughter-in-law found one bungalow available in the place they live and I had to start things moving before they let Colin come home. This meant a lot of work, harrassment and heartache as we had been in the previous large three bedroomed house since 1979 and had to move to a small two bedroom bungalow very quickly with Colin not wanting to move as well. We are now in the bungalow and it is gradually getting sorted out as we had to pack everything and are having to sort out what is necessary now we have moved. The garage is full!!!! But, I would rather have all that work again rather than have to put Colin into a full time care home. There are always some things not right in them.

My opinion only as well as explanation as to why I have been missing a lot lately.

Mavis, I do hope you will both soon settle into your new home.
It must have been very traumatic for you over the Xmas period and it is soul destroying when decisions like yours have to be made
so quickly.

In time you will realise it is a good move and the one thing you will need is help. However hard you try it is impossible to be a 24 hour carer and it is important that your own health doesn't suffer.

Thank you for all your good wishes. Colin is now happy here, and, if he is happy then so am I. It is taking us a long time to sort everything out but we are coping quite well. Colin has had a few 'accidents' since we got here: He blew up the TV (not sure how), blew up his music centre (fitted a plug to the speakers and plugged them in blowing the speaker unit inside the player as well), he has fused the main fuse three times and has mowed through the cable for the lawn mower three times. We keep trying to persuade him that he isn't capable of doing different things now but he insists he is. It is frustrating sometimes but it must be the same for him and, as has been said, at least we are still together (married 54 years at end of this month). He keeps looking for the stairs, but has settled besides this.

It doesn't matter how long it takes to go through all the boxes, and some things have already been sent to charity shops and to the Bridlington Visually Impaired Club and I am collecting another couple of boxes full of things to get rid of to different places.

But, as always, I am bouncing back again and will be on the games regularly again now.

Mavis - you have my greatest respect- you must be a very strong person to have coped so well.

We moved by choice about 15 months ago and I found it stressful after 33 years in our previous house. I had worked in Social Services for some years and had seen the heartbreak for many people being 'forced' to make such a difficult decision at what was already an extremely stressful time for them and so we made the decision to move to a bungalow while we had the opportunity and health (and the money before we blew it all on holidays).

It sounds like you and Colin have made the right decision and I wish you both all the very best for the future.

This post has highlighted the great change that has happened to lifestyles over time.

In my youth care was always provided, in my community and I’m sure in most others, by the extended family, who normally lived within close proximity. However, as time has passed and lifestyles change the extended family may now be spread throughout the world, which makes it difficult for help to be easily provided.

What this post highlights is probably one of the biggest fears of those of us growing older, or who are carers.

Being a relative newbie to this forum, I would like to congratulate all of you above for the compassion and support you are giving to Mavis and Colin. I do not know them, but from all your posts it is obvious to all that you hold them in great regard.

I am sure they appreciate your support and the knowledge that out there are people who deeply care.

Again congratulations to all.
