News; why is it always bad?

Unread post by Frank Manning »

Sue and I were watching BBC News recently (I know  ) and we both said almost simultaneously "Why is it that all we get in the news these days is bad news?" it's not as though we can blame the tabloids. BBC seems to revel in bad news delivered with glum faces,

"We're all doomed!" How about some good news headlines?

"Britain to stage the World's greatest Horticultural Show, again."

What non political good news headline would you most like to see? There are some obvious ones, like cures for diseases.

Hi Frank,

All this 'doom and gloom' - war and disaster, I know what you mean. I wonder if it's like motorsport spectators - some of them go to watch the skill of the drivers or the hive of activity in the pit lane and pits, but some of them go half hoping to see accidents and drama apparently.

Maybe publishing the negative side of things (war, disaster etc) is supposed to make those of us not involved with it thankful for the quiet uneventful lives we lead?

I don't know - but I don't call war and disaster entertaining.

Em

When I worked for the Beeb I was occasionally asked this question.

The reason is simple. News is generally about the unusual, and even in our modern world most things that happen are still good, hence dull and un-newsworthy.

To give a couple of examples.

50,000 cars drive down M6 and complete their journey safely. Normal, dull and not news.

Minibus overturns on M6 killing and injuring 12 occupants - unusual, awful, but newsworthy.

1000 pensioners have good nights sleep, wake up refreshed and go off on cruise - good, dull, not news.

1 pensioner wakes up in middle of night to find house being burgled and gets battered by the intruder. Horrible, but newsworthy.

There are a few examples of where something is both good and newsworthy - such as new treatment for cancer found.

It would be a sad day when the world was in such a state that all the unusual things were good and the news bulletins were reporting the few cities without bomb and riots, or the odd country which wasn't at war.

But makes my point. It's only news at all because it so rarely happens!

Now if Stoke won the cup (or anything) that would be the lead story for weeks. :sarcasm:

But on the plus side they did earn me a pint this season, by finishing above me brother's team, West Ham.

Being a "Gunner"

The good news was that Hull were a very organised team and outplayed Arsenal for most of the final, headed by an excellent manager, Mr Steve Bruce

Naturally well pleased that Arsenal edged it in extra time
