Are you a "organised" or are you happy go lucky ?

Unread post by suespud »

Alex is a planner....I go with the flow...
He likes a place for everything... Hmmmmmmm

He likes lists, times to do things, length of time it's going to take him( always wrong).
Wardrobe is in order...spare everything... his cupboards in Windsor make me laugh.
When we go away, he has all his outfits planned, day by day.
He likes to know exactly what we are going to do, where we are going to eat..etc

Drives me mad....I drive him mad by being the complete opposite.

Heaven help us when he returns home to live at the end of the year after working away for soooo many years.

I'm organised and neurotic and I have lists for everything. My husband wouldn't know what a list was if it wrapped itself around him and is the most laid back person around. Good job opposites attract.

I am super organised and efficient - to the point of being obsessive. Tony is the complete opposite, which can cause friction at times.

I'm a bit of both, definitely a list person as I like to be organised and without one I would be useless, when I pack I cross off the list as it goes in the case even down to which outfits have gone in there, I'm even sadder because all my cruise clothes/shoes/handbags I have listed on my laptop.

It ends there though because unless there is a 'must see' somewhere we pretty much go with the flow and do things as and when they happen the exception of course being if there is some sporting event being shown then we have to plan our day around that but I guess that is just a man thing

We are both happy go lucky and take each day as it comes. We would both hate being governed by time and having things planned. In the past we have been out shopping, seen a last minute holiday in a TA,s window, booked it and gone home and packed.

Nowadays the OH leaves everything to me as he says I know what I am doing. When we go away he presumes I have booked everything and he just takes his clothes out of the wardrobe straight into the case. I am not allowed to touch his case which is good as I don't get the blame when we go away and he has left his trousers at home hanging on the door.

I do write lists but alway forgot to take them out with me.

My OH was 'old school' the man goes out to work and the wife stays at home . If I had met him 50 years ago he would have been on his bike. As a young widow with 2 small children everything was my responsibility so I had to work. We met 20 years ago and since he finished work he has become very domesticated and it is now lovely to have things done for me.

Sue and Maureen, Although you are both with someone who is the opposite to you I think you have the advantage of 'growing' with that person. Changing the way you do things in later life is hard.

Hi Sue,

I wouldn't describe myself as an orgonised person but l do like things tidy around the house.

Generally speaking, l tend to leave the important orgonising to my wife....mostly due to her not trusting me to do it properly, and that she is a control freak  ......but please don't tell my wife lve said that.....squeak squeak.

Regards

We both tend to fall into both camps - partly organised and partly disorganised. The problem is that we are both organised doing the same things!

I like everything where it should be (in it's place) at home, and I tend to take this habit with me wherever we go. So, on a cruise, the same group items will always be found in a drawer in the bathroom, another group of items will always be found in the desk drawer - etc.

I love being organised because I realised at an early age that being organised meant that I could upsticks and head off quickly if I wanted to with minimum bother. I know people who can't find stuff etc - and it drives me batty. So, if the lights ever fail or we need to find something in the dark - it's not difficult.

On the point of being tidy, husband came in from the garden the other day and made a comment at the state of his shoes, and I said as a joke that if he kept the garden cleaner he wouldn't have got his shoes in a state!

Oh dear me.

Andrea - I think you are right about being with an 'opposite' and 'growing' with them. I am slowly mellowing and learning to do things on the spur of the moment occasionally without planning every move but I think that has come with the freedom of retirement and having no family commitments nowadays. We have done a couple of holidays on the spur of the moment when we have seen a bargain - mind you, that night I have lain in bed going through lists of things to do the next day. Right next to me is my list of jobs to be completed when we get back from holiday in June so old habits are dying hard and I have already written my list(s) of things to pack in the hope that this time I pack enough underpants for hubby.

It is far more important to be organised when you work full time and have other family commitments.

Lists bring me out in cold sweats..panic..real panic.especially if Alex writes them for me.
I have to do the circle type thing with points coming off it, in my own writing..with lots if doodling.

I'm aware where things are in my home, may not be obvious to Alex, but if we have a power cut I know where the candles and matches are..lol
We tried a new method for our holiday we have just had on the west coast of Scotland.
As we were staying in five different pubs, hotels, Alex wanted me just to take a suit carrier and a travel bag into each place.
I just couldn't....I need to choose what I'm wearing on the day..lolol
But I did agree to book the ferries, to the Isle of Skye, and the 3 Islands one instead of turning up.
We didn't have an itinery as such... Just went where we wanted to.
We had an amazing unstructured holiday!!!

I can pack very easily.... Just take everything I want!!! Lolol
Although for our family holiday in august, I only have 20kgs so will have to take less. :(

I have an under the stairs cupboard which is full to overflowing...with all my stuff, stuffed in... k No order, but I can put my hands on anything..lol
Alex has his shed...very very neat...

Ditto! I have even written a poem about Sue's lists. For me there are priods of real organisastion, but I do tend to play things by ear a bit, and I achieve most when the computer is off all day.

Too long to write here Dennis, anyway didn't I recite it to you on Arcadia?

"The dawn chorus would awake if only we could hear,
but we have a big alarm clock and keep it fairly near.
She wakes up first most days and takes a look at me,
while I drag my eyes wide open saying ' have you made the tea'?
I'd drink my tea in silence if only she'd allow, but
now she's getting pen and paper, making such a row.
Still I lie here silently hoping to be kissed,
while she sits up in bed and starts to write her daily list."

etc etc.

We are fairly organised and general keep the bungalow tidy, the only time it's not, is when the grandchildren visit, but as they are getting older they are not too bad, also their mother makes them tidy up before they leave.

When Lorraine has finished the washing & ironing, everything is put away in certain drawers or hung in the wardrobes, I then just go and help myself when I need something. We each have our own allocated drawers and wardrobes, for instance separate drawers for my underpants and socks, so I have no bother finding anything.

I may make a list of clothes to pack in my case before going on holiday, Lorraine will just pack her case from memory. If we are going on a self drive holiday, or doing our own excursions, I may make a list of places to visit, but not days, dates or times. We very rarely leave home to go anywhere at the time we arrange, nearly always later.

We are governed by certain events, such as collecting grandchildren from school on certain days, or dog sitting our sons two German Shepherd dogs, but other than that we take each day as it comes.

We may just get up in the morning and decide to go out for the day, then spend an hour discussing where to go to

Our loft which is boarded and has easy access is stuffed full to overflowing with stuff, some belonging to our children, also a couple of clothes rails full of holiday clothes, suites etc.. :D

Having read Frank's poem about his wife writing lists in bed, when I worked I kept a notepad and pen by the bed in case I woke up worrying about something I had to do the next day and rather than lay awake worrying I wrote it on the list so that I could lay back down and go to sleep, safe in the knowledge I wouldn't forget it.

Bloomin' glad I have retired now. :D :D

That worked for me too Maureen. Many is the time I have lain awake thinking things over only to have forgotten half the list by morning. The fact I had a notepad atthe side of the bed made a big difference. Not only could I get back to sleep but I still had my lists when I woke up.

I'm not really a list person at all. I tend to do everything off the cuff except when we start packing for a cruise. Then I print off my packing list off the computer which saves me having to dream it all up again. Now my OH has a list for everything, and very detailed they are. And she keeps a record of most everything, sometimes so much she has problems in recovering them. Meanwhile I clear out anything I think is superfluous.
I was taught to be cautious

Is there an explanation of waking up with things on you mind. I do it regularly and get up but just make a milky coffee then I can get straight back to sleep.

I used to laugh at my mam (in a nice way) about all the little notes she used to write to remind her to remember things...lol

I'm beginning to think I need to do that....
