Are We British Anymore?

Unread post by david63 »

Just been reading this where the PM is suggesting that we are losing/have lost our "Britishness".

I do have to agree that we are "pandering" to other ethnicities ahead of our own. It seems that nothing must be done to upset anyone and in doing so we are diluting our own country.

It is basically very simple - this is our country and we should run it the way that we want and if someone doesn't like that then go somewhere else that suits them better, nobody is being forced to stay in this country.

Absolutely, without question, David.

What can we do about it?

People who cruise probably see far more countries than any other traveller.
On entering a foreign country it is a well known fact that we adapt to their lifestyle so why doesn't it apply in this country.

I believe learning to speak English is a priority to enable them to feel less isolated in the community.
I live in a multi cultural city where on the whole there is very little trouble but it does disturb me that some schools have so many children who have very little knowledge of the English language. This stems from the parents not learning how to communicate and consequently teaching their children.
The class GD is in has 10 children where English is their first language, the rest are facing the battle of understanding and learning at the same time.
It isn't just recent arrivals that it applies to, I know Italian families that came here after the war and that some of the older generation can still only say things like hello and goodbye, fortunately their offspring learnt for them.

I am no racist, but it would be nice to listen to the news and just for once not hear the words Islam and Muslim. They are getting too much press!

Couldn't agree with you more David.....but you can forget all notion that this country can retain any resemblance to what it was to be British.

We should have listened to Enoch Powell.....we didn't and now we are paying the price.

You can't expect to live in a multicultural society and retain your countries identity....they are incompatible in my opinion. Multicutralisam can only work if there is integration and l can't see any evidance of this happening within our country so we will carry on talking about what it should be like to be British whilst othere in our society will do everything they can do to dismantle it

Quote from Davids link....

"A belief in freedom, tolerance of others, accepting personal and social responsibility, respecting and upholding the rule of law."

Well if we are serious about upholding these principles then we should start by closing every muslim school in this ccuntry.

Lioness I agree. Whether it in this country or abroad that is what fills the headlines every day.
All I have ever wanted is to live a peaceful life, but it frightens me for future generations. If something isn't done now by this or future governments we are going to see the Baghdad situation here. Events in other parts of the world by extremists alarms me .

I am very content to be British, and I try and be the best of British - and especially when I'm overseas.

I always try and adapt to the language and ways of any country I'm in, based on the fact that I wanted to be in whichever country it is, and therefore I've done my homework and know what to expect and how to behave.

People from other countries should ensure their own contentment by following the same idea.

I don't see anything wrong in foreigners keeping up their 'old country' traditions - food, folk dancing, special days etc., but they really would get far more out of travelling to (and living in) a 'foreign' country if they simply 'went with the flow'.

Two flo-dears!

the short answer is no

but what to do. without being accused of racism?
if an Indian or Muslim comedian takes the mickey out of their own culture or the "British way of life , it is funny, such as the Khumars or Citizen Kahn
if a British comedian does the same, they are racist? so how do you balance the scales?
we have become scared and ashamed of our own identity and are too PC to say anything. lest we are stigmatised, which is sad

We have relinquished Britishness to the liberal left who have pushed multi culturalism. In essence this is no bad thing since in the right context it enhances our culture. However we have pandered so much to other cultures they have now taken precedence over the native culture and anybody who dares to question it is accused of racism. in many ways we are strangers in our own land. Looney left councils are so busy banning elements of British culture in case we offend our immigrant population only helps to cause unrest and resentment. The best of it is the immigrants have no problem with our British way of life anyway. This is political correctness making matters worse.

For a start I would stop providing interpreter services in police stations, hospitals and welfare offices at taxpayers expense. I was absolutely flabberghasted by the amount we spend in translating. This is just one example where we have bent over too far to accommodate multi culturalism.

Anyone who comes to this country to make a positive contribution is welcome, irrespective of race, religion, skin colour. However it should be a condition of entry that this is Britain and immigrants accept our culture. Any attempt to change it should be resisted. When in Rome and all that............

My recent post regarding a personal sold out appearance of Mr Nigel Farage at the wonderful art decor restored Tivoli Theatre sited in the Minster town of Wimborne, Dorset

Dear Nigel would give a hearty thumbs up for this well intended thread

Me, I sit on the fence, with a resounding "no comment"

Although a Daily Mail reader I do often wonder if their wild and probably exagerated reporting of any issues regarding integration and extremist religous activities and the like, are not one of the main reasons for the increased anxiety and intolerance that seems apparent in society in general, as indeed exemplified by the answers so far to David's question.
I certainly don't consider myself to be particularly tolerant regarding these issues, but I am concerned about the polarisation that is being created by some of the reporting of them in the media.

The problem in this country is not immigration but the levels of immigration. It was Blair who had a secret agenda to make the country multi-cultural and opened our borders up. I personally welcome the Eastern Europeans who are doing the jobs our people will not take (and with a smile on their faces!!), the different food restaurants from around the world, nurses and doctors in our hospitals etc. However we have been literally swamped to the extent we have a housing crisis and problems in education and health provision. This is not the fault of the immigrants themselves but successive governments who have buried their heads in the sand and hoped the situation would resolve itself. Anybody found to be showing any concerns was branded 'racist'.

Add into the mix successive governments at both local and national level who have pandered to the interests of the immigrant communities and their cultures, at the expense of our own and it is obvious that problems were going to occur. Recently we have had the 'Trojan Horse' problems in Birmingham schools, shariah law, problems with radical Islamists, the arranged marriage situation and issues surrounding female genital mutilation, all contrary to the British culture. Thankfully this government seems prepared to question the acceptance of these elements of culture and tradition which are being brought into the country and taking a stance against them.

I believe David Cameron's quote mentioned equality.

As a white, heterosexual, male, tax paying, middle class(ish), Christian I'd like a bit of that please.

It will soon become against the law to be a Christian, mark my words.

it will be against the law to be British soon, never mind owt else

the leadership of this country over the last 20 years or so, has robbed us of almost anything this country once had
Even Maggie, God bless her and all who sail on her, didn't sell us off to the highest bidder
It is shameful and it will only get worse
