Re: World Cup 2014
Well l hope the England players were watching the Costa Rica game this afternoon as it had everything that was missing from our two lackluster performances. They never stopped running for each other. Their passing was precise, as was their tackling but most of all they seemed to have a game plan, one of which they had all read.
I still think we have the talent to perform on the world stage but we need a game that has moved on from those glory days back in 1966.
Ah well, only 10 months to wait until the England flag makes an appearance again.

Re: World Cup 2014
So Costa Rica are through, Italy need at least a draw and Uruguay need to beat Italy. Therefore Englands last game is a total dead rubber we cannot influence anything, except of course to salvage some pride by beating Costa Rica.

Re: World Cup 2014
I'm going on holiday next Saturday. At the time of booking we wondered if we'd be watching an England match on a river boat in deepest Germany, but decided to book anyway, as we felt it would be no surprise if England didn't make it beyond the group stage. We've been proved right

Re: World Cup 2014
It will be interesting to see how England respond in their final match. If it were me I would cover every blade of grass on the pitch (even if I was goalkeeper!!!) just to prove all the critics wrong. Time will tell but I can imagine quite a few disgruntled England supporters out there, who have paid out a lot of money, will not be happy if they go stroll-about.
Personally I would like to see Hodgson play his younger players. We have nothing to lose and the experience will do them good.

Still think that Onelife?!Onelife wrote:Can't say l was overly impressed with the way Brazil played last night....helped by a poor refereeing decision.
Perhaps its wishful thinking but l think England will do a lot better than most of the pundits are predicting.
Come on England.

True. I don't really qualify as a pundit, knowing not a lot about football, but I predicted they'd go out on penalties, as usual. But they didn't even get that far!david63 wrote:That all depends on what the pundits were predictingMervyn and Trish wrote:Still think that Onelife?!Onelife wrote:Can't say l was overly impressed with the way Brazil played last night....helped by a poor refereeing decision.

having foolishly watched both games.....I know , I know
I can't help but think that the whole England team were beaten by one man both times
against Italy it was 10 men aiming for Ballotelli
against Uraguay it was 10 men aiming for some bloke with a dodgy knee
and they still lost...;attest id Gerard is retiring from International football, way to go Captain

Re: World Cup 2014
Joe Hart has worked out why we lost...............................
'It's simply that we haven't scored enough goals and we have let too many in'.
I hadn't thought of that!!!!

Re: World Cup 2014
That's perceptive.
As far as I can see, as an ignorant non fan, we were largely beaten by players who get their weekly experience in the Premiership.
We have to decide whether our priority is the best international players playing in our club sides at home or bringing on home talent for the national team.
Under the present system we'll win the World Cup the same year we win the Eurovision Song Contest.

Re: World Cup 2014
Let's bite the bullet and grin
England has lost it's footie skills good and proper
Should the FA have a good think ?
Limit the number of foreign players a ceiling on wages/transfers payments for starters
Methinks that whilst the Premiership is probably the best league driven by ridiculous overpaid world wide imports
Should there be a limit to these imports, giving the English lads a chance to enhance
their football skills
IMO the media are also doing the British football scene no favours at all

Re: World Cup 2014
Ne'er a truer word spoken gfw.
Interesting what Harry Redknapp said as well. Pride in the shirt? Commitment? Those players (if true and I have no reason to doubt him) should never be invited near an England shirt ever again. I am shocked but not surprised and suspect it is only the tip of the iceberg. Some of our current crop hardly look motivated or even slightly bothered (apart from the fact how much they lose in sponsorships, promotion of products and win bonuses). Some are so wealthy even that wouldn't bother them. They need somebody like Bill Shankly around them!!!

Perhaps we could put a team together from the forum? I've always been cr@p at football, but we couldn't do any worse and the money would come in handy. And I'm as good as the next bloke at lying down and crying if any of the opposing side come within three feet.

I played Goalie in school, and could do with a lucrative commercial deal, to pay for a suite on Seaborne or Regent

Yep he played for England twice in the FIFA World Cup.
1950 the first year England had played in the FIFA World Cup, the year England were humiliated when we lost 1-0 to America, although he did not play in that match. Uruguay won the cup that year.
Then he played again in 1954, when England were knocked out by Uruguay loosing 4-2. The cup was won by West Germany that year.
I had the privilege of meeting Sir Bobby Robson, when he managed Newcastle, if ever there was a real gent it was him. He played for England 20 times, when he managed the England team, he took it to the semi finals of the World Cup, the highest place England have achieved since Sir Alf Ramsey in 1966. I attended and played in goal for the same school as Sir Alf attended, but not at the same time. Played against such players as Jimmy Greaves who attended a different school in the area.

Having watched quite a few of the matches the one thing that stands out to me is how unfit we looked compared to other sides.......England players looked a spent force half way through the second half of both matches.......lots to work on me thinks.......you're right DK......what a shower!
My tenner on Holland aint looking a bad bet......come on Holland!!!
