just to get back on track
if we had a more robust immigration policy in the past, just think of all the things we would be missing

Chinese food
French food
etc
and all the music, art and literature we take for granted
there may be some extremes to consider but on the whole we would be a pretty bland place , were it not for cultural influences from other countries
and the names for the days of the week would be much different

The Julian Calender is Roman and most of the population is not truly British but a hotch potch of european and other ancestry

I don't see that a more robust immigration policy would deny us the benefits brought about by decent, hard-working immigrants.

We need a robust policy that will stop "benefits tourists" or whatever they're called, merely coming to live here because our Government thinks that our money can be given away to all and sundry.

Mind you, we also need a policy that stops indigenous girls from thinking that getting pregnant is a career move, so that the State will provide them with housing etc.

Amongst a great many other things.

Maybe I should set up a new thread "What would you do if you ruled the country"....

And we still do not have any of these - we only have pseudo offerings that have been tailored to what is perceived as that type of food that the British want (and have now become conditioned to believe is authentic)

No WE do (or to be correct we did not) "British" up other people's food but the immigrants from other countries did. Take Indian food for example - there is no way that you will find the type of dishes served in a British Indian restaurant/takeaway anywhere in India - you only have to look at the dishes served in Sindhu.

I certainly would not patronise a "Chinese" restaurant that served chow mein or chop suey. I think a good way of assessing how authentic the food at a restaurant is, is to see how many customers of that nationality eat there. I've been to a couple of Chinese restaurants in London where I was the only non-Chinese, and the menus were printed in Cantonese. I had no idea what I was eating (my Chinese host ordered), but it was very good!

The issue for me is that none of those who previously joined our society and brought us those culinary joys tried to ban us from eating Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding or Fish and Chips.

And indeed today there is no problem with those who wish to come and share this country while still enjoying elements of their own culture.

The problem is the bleeding heart liberals who believe that those already here, including many generations of diverse culture, should bow down and take second place to the latest arrivals. For example imposing Halal food on schoolchildren of all backgrounds, whether it is part of their culture/religion or not, and renaming Christmas as Winterval or something similarly bonkers, to avoid upsetting the non Christians.

And those who would wish to replace our legal system with sharia law as another example.

When in Rome do as the Romans do might seem old fashioned and a step too far these days, but when in Rome make them do as I do is not acceptable.

Before anyone mentions our colonial past, where in some cases we believed appallingly, or the Crusades where we also should be ashamed of some of what was done, as my old Mum would say, "two wrongs don't make a right!"
