Hogroast?

We've been invited to an event which has a hogroast in it - ok, what is the average menu for a hogroast?

I need to be careful, so I'm hoping somebody can advise.

Thanks! No - what I meant (and I wasn't very clear) was will it be dripping in fat, what sort of side dishes are 'normally' provided?

I reckon I'm getting myself into a sticky situation with this event - I just need to know what is on offer at the average hog roast?

I think it depends on who is the caterer - we went to one a year or so back and they provided bread, roast hog and apple sauce - the hostess had to provide everything else - it wasn't even cooked on site...

I've seen others advertised where there is a spit roast and they carve in front of you!

It is, or can be, quite yummy but very unhealthy, tis usually served with slices of crusty bread with lashings of mustard and pickles plus copious qualities of alcohol.

Takes the best part of a day to cook and baste it to perfection on a spit roast, best hand cranked tis said in Darzet.

I think you will find the pork is served in a bun and you will have a selection of salads. So it is a pork "hamburger" with salad and sauces.

There maybe alternatives to the pork, or you could just have the salad. It depends on how much you want to attend the event.

The one I went to was typical BBQ fare. The hog was called Malcolm and he had his revenge - I broke my tooth on the crackling

I accepted the invitation before I found out about the catering, and officially I don't know about the catering as it is supposed to be a secret/surprise!

I can't really wriggle out of it - I'll just have to get around the problem somehow.

We went to a wedding recently and they had a pig roast in the evening. It was served with buns, coleslaw and green salad. I ate the salad, minus the bun and definitely minus the meat!( veggie) everyone said it was delicious but it looked hudeous to me and yea, was dripping in grease!

The good lady went to a conference recently and the catering college put on a hog roast. Juliet said the meat was beautiful. Not fatty or oily at all. I was quite envious since neither of us have had hog roast before.

Have some Em. You can always leave it if you don't like the look of it.

I had a hogroast once, done on a spit and it was certainly not dripping with fat. Any fat which came out in the roasting fell on the charcoal embers. Having said that I can't say I thought the meat was any better than usual but if you haven't had it before it's worth trying. Why not just have a little bit Em, just to find out?

Well I reckon I'm going to be between the attractive chap in lycra with horns and the deep blue sea! I'm trying to find out exactly what it's going to be like, but I want to avoid feeling hungry at the end of a long and very trying day and not being able to eat what is available. QED I'll have to try and sort out my own 'secret stash' and hope I can get through the situation discreetly.

I am not willing to consume anything which is dripping in fat or grease, and I'm not a big fan of salads - other than a normal green salad without any dressing. I just don't want any problems, and anyway I've got a smashing excuse because I've got a holiday to look forward to.

Fingers crossed! As for people 'hoping' to be my 'plus one' - apart from the fact that 'honour' goes to my husband, there's no way that I would ask anyone to have to put up with an event which I myself have doubts about; however, it was nice of you to offer!

I love a proper hog roast ... mmmmmmm.
At one hotel we stayed in they had leg of beef on the menu ... I was quite surprised to see the chef carving bits off from the entire leg of a cow at his serving station.

Em, I am with you on this. I couldn't think of much worse to eat than a hog roast. I actually dislike BBQ s of any sort so generally take my own food and explain to the hostess that because of food allergies I need to know what I am eating. It gives down much better than saying I am on a diet.

WOW - that's brilliant, if I had even the faintest glimmer of hope that the hosts had a good sense of humour I'd try it on. As a confirmed coward, I think I'll go with Sue's idea.

Hi Jo,

Normally I would sort of 'shoot from the shoulder' and go along with your thoughts, but it's a special occasion and I'm going to be very diplomatic.

Even moreso, because the next 'special event' is sort of being 'hosted' by us - so I'm hoping that people will return the thoughtfulness and carefulness.

However, having said that, I know that the menu for our event is being very carefully worked out; and timings too. I just love having 'a bit of a do', and I really enjoy all the planning and organising.

We had a hog roast at the office summer party a couple of years ago.

This takes place on the field next to the office at lunch time

I ended up with a couple of nicely roasted pork slices, apple sauce and some salad.

Really, unless you draw attention to it, no one will notice whether you eat the hog roast or not
