Fair comment just as those who seemed to be able to do as they pleased would think they did a good job?

Do you know what John I doubt there were too many who would, on reflection, believe that they did a great job but most would accept that they did at least try to. However that was then and this is now and I believe that the postion has changed somewhat as will be evident if and / or when the P&O Community site is re-born.

i would be surprised if the forum is as open as it was, I think it will be restricted to cruise topics and ships, with no room for chat, that way it would be a proper pltform for PandO

Some travel forums allow NO off topic at all, it isn't conducive to a good atmosphere, on the FB group I use most we say we want it to be like a dinner table on a cruise, varied chat on all subjects but all there for a common reason.

David, I do hope that you will reconsider your position if the P&O forum does eventually make a comeback. The way you set this up so quickly and the features that you have included and the ease with which you have incorporated suggested amendments are a standard which anyone seeking to set up a similar website on their favourite pastime would do well to try and emulate. The results in the way in which subscribers have entered into friendly conversations on all things cruising should be something which makes you very proud of your achievement, and I do hope that you feel it is something that you wish to continue.

Well spoken towny44

Furthermore, this forum isn’t affiliated to any cruise line therefore loyalty to a particular brand doesn’t become an issue when posting.... I’m not so sure that was the case on the old P&O forum.

Hi Mo2013,

It's now my chance to say hello to you - for ages people on the P&O forum thought that I was you. Oh well, that was then - this is now, and at last I can say hello to the person who isn't me! :)

Similarly, it's great to see JtD around and about and seemingly fit and well.

I do like this forum, I can't put my finger on it - maybe the moderation is better - but anyway I think we owe those people involved in setting up and running it a huge vote of thanks.

Long may it last.

Em :) :)

Don't matter how much you moderate, there will always be unpleasant threads, whether it be forums or fb.

I thought the moderators on the P&O forum, did as good a job as on any cruise fb page I am aware of.

The problems with the P&O forum, was with its design and operation, as this forum has more than proved.

From the start the P&O forum did not function well. It was slow, posts were lost, PMs didn't always get through, there were logging in problems etc etc. This site has been a breath of fresh air.
As for moderation offending posts were made and nothing was done. Many of the fall outs could have been avoided had admin stepped in quicker to eliminate abuse. If a P&O forum does appear it is hoped it will emulate this one.

Part of the problem was that Admin were conspicuous by their absence over the weekends. This was known by some who sought to take advantage of this fact, with their behaviour/posting style changing on a Friday tea-time.

You're right Romig. Some deliberately waited for the weekend and you could virtually predict what was about to happen.

Ain't that the truth Romig! TBH I was never sure whether moderating the P&O forum was someone's full time job or whether it was tagged on to a load of other responsibilities, hence the delay in dealing with issues.

Either way I'm sure that Admin felt like shutting the thing down on more than one occasion over the years given some of the nonsense that went on!

There will always be two factors that will benefit any forum that P&O may reinstate. The first, which is their USP, is that there is free access to it from on board the ships. The second is that there is a "ready made" member base of past, current and future customers. Neither of these will ever be possible on a forum such as this.

One thing that has become evident though is that there is a need for a "community" type of forum and if that aspect is removed from any P&O offering then it will be, in my opinion, a great mistake and would show a total lack of understanding of not only what a social forum is all about but what a number of people want (or should that be need :?:)

The trouble with the old forum was admin wouldn't listen to reason & couldn't spot a troll if it bit them on the leg.
I liked it there & had been cruising for a while before I found it, didn't know what "the community" was, but one day I had a look & found it quite friendly, I remember "Aurorabore" answered my first question, someone who I have now met on a cruise. It all went quite well until we had raids by trolls. If admin had just recognised that it's people who start things are the problem not those pushed into a response.
I am sure that's all in the past now so we can look forward I hope. :)

David

I completely agree with what you say. In order to have a real 'community' there needs to be the ability to chat about non-cruising 'stuff' and if P&O don't include it in their new offering (assuming of course that there will be a new offering!) then it will be all the poorer for it.

However, in the meantime we have this excellent temporary home that P&O would do well to learn from :D

I have said elsewhere a cruise forum should be like a good table at dinner on a cruise, all subjects discussed by those brought together by a common purpose.

I would go further than that John, as there are some subjects which are perfectly legitimate topics on a forum, but may make some people feel awkward if confronted with at a dinner table. It's easier to ignore a subject on a discussion board than it is on a cruise.

True, but people tend not to bring up to many controversial things at dinner...mind you our 28 night cruise was more relaxed in subject matter.

Actually the admin team on P&O were quite good at spotting 'trolls' but very slow to deal with them ... I guess they hoped that after a couple of warnings they would grow up a bit and start behaving like the adults they purported to be. Sometimes people are their own worst enemy, but just can't see it.
I am sure that's all in the past now so we can look forward I hope. :)
So why have you brought up your somewhat myopic and misleading view of the P&O boards for the 3rd (or is it 4th) time within the last couple of weeks.

I will let this post sit, however since it is nothing to do with this board, any future posts in relation to issues posters have had on other boards will be deleted or have their content removed with no explanation given. Please try to move on! The advice I always give is to ignore those posts or posters that you may have a problem with or report them to the moderation team.

I agree, David, I have always said that the P&O forum was much much more than just a forum, it was a true online community with many things being discussed and talked about ... but we all had one core interest and that was in cruising.

Ken, I was surprised to read your comment that any reference to the old Cruise Community will be removed. I was about to reply to Boris (Em) Hi Em! I remember reading all those posts which accused her of being me, and I was virtually screaming at the computer (I was banned and had no right of reply) that Em was genuine. Of course, over time, people have realised their mistake, and I hope they've realised that they made other mistakes too.

Reading the concept that a forum should be like a dinner table, then my observation is that if someone did not agree with you, or said something you did not like, you wouldn't ban them. Too many people refuse to respect, even if they don't accept, another's view when it differs from their own and that, in my opinion, is what causes all the trouble.
