Hi Em, we've been to a few hog roasts and usually the meat is very nice, not dripping in fat because it all drips out as it's being turned on the spit. The ones we've been to have included nice crusty bread rolls plenty of salad, ( some green and plain without dressings ) and sauces to add yourself if wanted. I'm not a fan of pork really but I did eat it and enjoy it, so it's worth a try.

I would imagine if it is a 'hogroast' event that this means quite a large event and that the hosts will have catered for the veggie and alternatives for people not liking 'hog' - so just go along and enjoy the event - if you know the people well enough a quiet word in their ear to say you can't eat 'pork' as it doesn't agree with you will probably put your mind at rest as I am sure they will tell you they have the usual party fare available as well.

Hi Jo,

Normally I would sort of 'shoot from the shoulder' and go along with your thoughts, but it's a special occasion and I'm going to be very diplomatic.

Even moreso, because the next 'special event' is sort of being 'hosted' by us - so I'm hoping that people will return the thoughtfulness and carefulness.

However, having said that, I know that the menu for our event is being very carefully worked out; and timings too. I just love having 'a bit of a do', and I really enjoy all the planning and organising.

Em
Sorry Em you've lost me, it's a special occasion and you've already said you are not supposed to know what the menu is which is why you are trying to be diplomatic then surely the other guests will be as much in the dark as you .. there could be vegetarians, people who don't eat pork for religious reasons or simply because they don't like it ( I'm not a particular lover ) so wouldn't any good host have an alternative menu planned ??

Apologies Jo,

When I host an event I take a delight in quietly ensuring that nobody has a problem, and I welcome odd requests etc. In the situation surrounding this particular event where we will be guests, I just don't dare say much.

I know it sounds complicated and awkward - and I can accept that's just the way it is. I don't really want to go, but I sort of have to.

Just go and enjoy the event then - without sounding rude unless you are a 'guest of honour' no-one is going to be watching you eat your hog roll and if it really turns your stomach - ditch it in the nearest available bin.

Em.

Do a reckie of the area before you go for the nearest fish and chip shop.

Hopefully you will enjoy the hog roast. I believe Onelife is providing the sweet and sour ;)

It sounds like you are giving it too much thought Em.
It's not all about food!!!
Eat something before you go.... Have a bread bun when you are there.

If I'm invited to a "do" I don't worry about what I'm going to eat.

If I'm hosting though, I must admit I do try and cater for everyone,
As much a person can possibly do of course.

Ah yes, grand idea, and I'd love to head for a simple fish 'n chip shop. I wish! It's not that I don't want to (same goes for the doughnut idea) - I can't, simple as that; and I don't want to make a fuss.

Anyway, I've had a look (online) of the area, and there are one or two not very big supermarkets, so I'll just have to see what I can get away with discreetly.

Hi Sue,

I think that if the 'do' was being hosted by you I wouldn't have a worry in the world, I'm sure you are a wonderful hostess.

As it is, I have to worry about food, and I'll be content when I've found out a bit more about the menu. I've got to get something sorted out, and the sooner I know what's happening, the sooner I can start 'looking forward' to it.

Meanwhile - off for a lovely 'granny day'.

But hey - thanks for your kind advice.

Em

I have found this thread fascinating Em. Do tell us how you solve your problem. I forgot to say that almost certainly there will be baked potatoes. This would fill you up, and you could have some green salad on the plate too.

Alternatively just don't go. At the last minute find an excuse not to attend. I am sure your hosts woul be mortified if they knew the upset this event is causing you.

You say you will be hosting a similar event yourselves in the future. What fare can you provide that everyone is guaranteed to like? Impossible task I suggest.

Hmm, what a gloriously first-world problem. Assuming this is a large event, no one is going to notice or care what you do and don't eat, so it would be inconsiderate and completely over the top to mention your food fads. If a small dinner party, unlikely given that an entire pig is on the menu, perfectly acceptable to mention (reasonable) food dislikes. Do you think you may be slightly dramatizing a minor problem, one that just about everyone has to deal with occasionally?

There are three things in the world I dislike and cannot eat. Couple of years ago, went to a wedding and all three featured in different components of the main course, meaning I could eat nothing. Hey ho, I survived and had double dessert.

Yes it does, to be honest.

As everyone has said, a hog roast implies a large gathering, so no one is going to be inspecting your plate to see what you may or may not be eating.

The food won't be just hog, there'll be other things too.

If it's really bothering you that much, don't go - nobody HAS to do anything these days, even though you have all these mysterious reasons for thinking you have to go.

If all you have to worry about is a hog roast, you are indeed a very fortunate person

There is one scenario that fits all the toing and froing, so perhaps ....

EM is not overly keen on groups of people, especially strangers and friends of others within the same family nor the forced chit chat that will be required. However she is going because she is part of the occasion and secondly she or hubby is paying for it.

My guess is that it's a christening celebration party

ps ... my second guess is that she's made the whole thing up

Surely, if she/he is paying for this outing, they can opt not to go!! It's one thing to do something out of duty, quite another to pay for something you don't want to do.
I don't think you have that scenario quite right MOB!!
