Changing Password

Unread post by CaroleF »

Am I glad I wrote down my password when I had to change it a year ago - well I assume it was a year ago. Last year when the request to change it came through I couldn't for the life of me think what my password was and had to email a certain Foxy person for help and eventually I remembered what it might be and all was well. Today I just had to go and look - yes I know you're not supposed to write down passwords but having to change it yearly there's no way I would remember if I didn't. Hope everyone else has not had a problem.

You actually have to change it every six months

I changed mine yesterday.

Don't tell David but I took Meg's advice from six months ago - changed it to a new one and then changed it back to the one I remember!!! It seems to work. If it's bad practice then I won't do it again.

The main purpose for changing password frequently is not to make life difficult for the users, nor to "protect" your data (although there is an element of that) but to protect the server.

It is possible, and had been known, for "undesirables" to gain access to a forum and through various "back doors" run some code which at best destroys the database and at worst corrupts the server.

Having said that no system is perfect and there will always be loopholes.

I have two passwords and alternate between the two ( not sure if that is right either ) but I know if it isn't one it will be the other should I forget.

I got quite frustrated a couple of weeks ago when I couldn't log in, I knew I had the right password so couldn't understand what the problem was .. then I realised I had put my email address in instead of user name

I was really lazy with changing my password yesterday - I used the same word but changed the number on the end so all I have to do is remember the number. It worked so I assume it is acceptable. I wouldn't know how to corrupt a database - I'm grateful if the computer/t.v. and anything else electrical even works when I touch it.

ah ha, so it's the one at the end of this is it?
NB, contains expletives, so do not read if you might be offended:
Setting your password:

Tech Support: Sorry that password has expired- you must register a new one.

Me: Did someone discover that password and hack my computer?

Tech Support: No, but your password has expired- you must get a new one.

Me: Why then do I need a new one as that one seems to be working pretty good?

Tech Support: Well, you must get a new one as they automatically expire every 30 days.

Me: Can I use the old one and just re-register it?

Tech Support: No, you must get a new one.

Me: I don't want a new one as that is one more thing for me to remember.

Tech Support: Sorry, you must get a new one.

Me: OK, roses

Tech Support: Sorry you must use more letters.

Me: OK, pretty roses

Tech Support: No good, you must use at least one numerical character.

Me: OK, 1 pretty rose

Tech Support: Sorry, you cannot use blank spaces.

Me: OK, 1prettyrose

Tech Support: Sorry, you must use additional characters.

Me: OK, 1fuckingprettyrose

Tech Support: Sorry, you must use at least one capital letter.

Me: OK, 1FUCKINGprettyrose

Tech Support: Sorry, you cannot use more than one capital letter in a row.

Me: OK, 1Fuckingprettyrose

Tech Support: Sorry, you cannot use that password as you must use additional letters.

Me: OK, 1FUCKINGprettyroseshovedupyourassifyoudon'tgivemeaccessrightfuckingnow

Tech Support: Sorry, you cannot use that password as it is already being used

I use firefox and with this I can access all my user names and passwords on my laptop, I assume that other OS also provide this feature.

Ever since eBay had their security scare I have been using LastPass which seemed to have good reviews. After being quite sceptical about it initially I now find it works well although I have yet to fathom out its use on my tablet so we can have a bit of fun when I am away from home. LastPass also produces some very interesting passwords but there is no way you would remember them!!!

You will probably need to upgrade to the paid version to get it to work on an Android device - not sure how much it is but it is worth it.

I have been using LastPass for a few years now and would not be without it.

There is its sister product Xmarks which con synchronise bookmarks across devices which is also worth having.

Having praised LastPass for handling my passwords I don't use it for any 'sensitive' passwords such as bank login details. PayPal etc although the system would not accommodate LastPass anyway.

Xmarks is a new one to me but I think I will stick with LastPass and amybe have a look athow much the paid version is.

Presumably you are using some sort of virus protection on your computer, do you not trust it to do its job of keeping your pc protected, if so why not get something that will.

Yes, I use a Norton Internet Security package and it was they who advised me about the raiding of passwords and the stealing of sensitive personal data ... remember the debacle recently re ' Heartbleed ' plus several others of course.

I would only consider using a product that is the custodian of my passwords for sites of no importance and certainly not for any site that involves financial transactions.

I occasionally use 2 other forums ( 1medical, 1timeshare ) so have them together on tapatalk as it is so easy to enter. . With this I don't use my password but does it still need changing.? As I only use I phone and I pad are there any risks.
