Whilst normally sympathetic to Israel, I too am sickened at the apparent indiscriminate bombing taking place in Gaza.

What makes people persist in killing and maiming, destroying towns and cities? What is ever achieved? Has this behaviour solved any problems? So much horror in so many places. Very very sad.

While that is true on the surface, it is frequently politics that lie behind it: - and if you took religion out of the equation, a large proportion of the protagonists would find something else to fight about instead.

I thought for a minute and thought that the answer to the 'why do they do it' question was ..... because they can.

Then I had another thought - it's maybe a form of bullying, and an opportunity to gain something without having to work for it. Afterall, when all is said and done, where the 'winning' side is concerned the people who make 'sacrifices' are the troops who are killed or maimed during campaigns, whilst the head honchos and politicians aren't perhaps in such danger.

Perhaps it's time for the ordinary 'Jo' to start saying 'no' to these head honchos? Would that ever really be possible though? Sadly not. However, if the foot soldiers etc weren't willing to go and do the dirty work demanded by the head honchos, then I doubt very much that there would not be enough head honchos to do the dirty work themselves.

What is being done to Palestine is disgraceful, and Israel really should know better - they appear to have incredibly short memories.

Sorry if that upsets anyone, but it's just my personal view. I am disgusted with their behaviour.

Whilst there may be some merit in what you say Em the problem is, as far as Israel is concerned, the the "foot soldiers" cannot say no as most of them are conscriptees and have option but to do as they are told or face the consequences.

Another point that has to be remembered is that "warring" is part the way of life in the middle east as all nations in that part of the world are descended from warring nomadic tribes - that is not to say that it is right and that they shouldn't "move on".

Hi David,

Oh boy, I think I'm treading on dangerous ground here - but is there a small possibility that Israel feels the need to conscript soldiers and maintain armed forces because it feels 'threatened' as a result of what it is doing?

I'm all for peace me, but I somehow (possibly wrongly) thought that Palestine was there before the modern day Israel was there? If I'm correct (and I could be hugely wrong), shouldn't this all stop - now?

I still reckon though that Israel has a jolly short memory, and shouldn't start lashing out to other countries what they didn't like being on the receiving end of themselves.

Oh well - I suppose I feel that Palestine is being 'bullied', and I don't like bullying.

Yes they have been fighting each other for thousands of years, and it is well documented in the Bible. (Religion and ideology! ) I am amazed that Israelis expect the world to remember the holocaust, but they expect the same world to turn a blind eye to west bank expansion on land captured originally through war from arabs.

I find my sympathy for Israel is evaporating fast, and my sympathy for the Palestinians is growing. It is a great pity that in these matters as in all wars it is the innocent who suffer the most.

Ok, I'm going to whizz back into Granny mode and have a happy Granny day - but before I do, I just have to say that 'Netting Yahoo' said on a broadcast yesterday how pleased he was that Britain was supporting him! I thought that the UK had sort of said something a bit different, and that the UK went along with the UN line that Israel was being (a) a bit heavy handed and that (b) the blockade must stop.

I think that 'Netting Yahoo' has taken words issued as a statement by the UK and blasted well twisted them - no change there then!

Apologies.

Yes it is sickening and indefensible.

But to Quote

Golda Meir - 1957

Peace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us.

I am not Jewish, but have had the privilege of visiting Israel and Palestine, just posting a quotation, which though quoted in 1957 is still behind the problem today.

A difficult proposition when the Israelis have occupied your land and continue to annexe even more.

I think Israel would dispute your analysis, but let's also not forget, the latest conflict between Hamas & Israel started On 12 June 2014, when three Israeli teenagers were kidnapped & murdered in Gush Etzion, in the West Bank, as they were hitchhiking to their homes.

IMHO that can't justify the wholesale slaughter of so many Palestinian citizens.

Neither can it justify the daily bombing of Israel by Hamas.

it would be interesting to know who is supplying arms to both sides
the Russians? The Americans. The UK?

perhaps if they were not being supplied with rockets and all the other weapons, they may sit down and talk

Hamas fire many missiles into Israel everyday at civilian areas not military and it is never reported. Who fired on the school yesterday Israel or Hamas? Israel did declare a cease fire , Hamas made sure it didn't work. Me, I would like to see cessation on both sides and both sides helped to fins a solution

I have heard it said that "if the Arabs laid down their weapons, there would be no more war. If the Israelis laid down their weapons, there would be no more Israel."

Maybe a little part of this 'problem' is that the blockade created by Israel as good as ensures that the weapons fired by Hamas aren't as accurate as those fired by Israel.

Having said that, and thinking that it is possible that Hamas as good as know that they can't guarantee where their missiles are going to land and explode - what do people expect them to do - give up and be invaded and ruled by Israel? Why should they?

On the other hand, Israel know that they are blockading supplies etc into Palestine, so from my point of view, Israel knows that it is limiting Palestine's ability to fire missiles accurately - if Israel doesn't like being on the receiving end of the 'wayward' missiles, it should lift the blasted blockade (which is a big complaint made by Palestine).

Someone said to me recently that they thought that Israel were stirring up this situation and then crying at the slightest thing, when what they are doing to Palestine is several times worse. I bit my tongue at the time (and changed the subject quickly), but maybe this is true.

Well I would be the first to agree that the only thing these organisations understand is a strong military stance. If we all stood up to militant terrorists, and fanatical religions the world might be a safer place. However even in our own country we deal with it with one hand tied behind our backs because we are not allowed to voice an opinion, or correct things which we see which are wrong by our society's standards, because of the 'PC equalities attitudes' of some of our 'pinko leftie' institutions such as Councils, the BBC etc. That in turn feeds sympathy and support for other organisations like EDL. Sue says "What a state the world is in!! What future for our grandchildren?"

Quite so, Frank, and I'm afraid it is only going to get much, much worse.

I don't actually know anything about the bombed school you mentioned. Was it a wayward shell from Israel? Were Hamas using the school as an attack base? Were they using the children as a human shield? God knows the truth of matter. I certainly don't.
