Daily News
I read somewhere recently ( it may have been on here ) about someone who whenever they were in port headed straight to buy an English newspaper.
At home we have a daily paper but if I’m honest when on holiday I’m not really interested in what is happening back at home, it is enough for me to read the headlines of anything important in the daily cabin news and of course the TV news ( although I rarely switch the cabin TV on )
So what do you do ??
Rush off to buy your daily fix of the Times/Mail/Sun ( usually 24 hours out of date and double the cost )
Take your laptop/ipad/iphone so you can be fully up to date with daily events.
Rely on the news the ship provides.
Or like me you couldn’t care less.

We are too tight to buy newspapers on holiday but if we are passing reception during the day we usually pick up the ship's news sheet. Also you can usually get up to date news on the cabin TV.

I'm with you DQ. I rely on the P & O newsheet. If it's that important, it'll be in there.
As for mobiles and laptops - I wouldn't dream of taking a laptop on holiday. My mobile is turned off and is only used for the alarm clock. I check it every day to see if there are any voice mails, but I never access t'internet. For one thing I'm scared I might leave it connected and run up a huge bill.

Well I can't be doing with news really when I'm on holiday, but the ipad brought along by the butler is sometimes used - and sometimes not.
I can remember on one cruise though, a woman who had been brought one of these ipads by the butler had to drag the blasted thing everywhere - just to show what grade of suite she was in! Yawn!
If we get one, it stays in the suite, and we don't use it much. The only 'news' as such that we are interested in is adequately provided on our own laptop - and it's family stuff really.

How do you know if it's an ipad brought by the Butler? Does it have a cover saying 'This person is staying in a suite'? ( and gives the cabin grade)Boris+ wrote:I can remember on one cruise though, a woman who had been brought one of these ipads by the butler had to drag the blasted thing everywhere - just to show what grade of suite she was in! I usually look at the ship's newspaper, or watch Sky News when we are getting up in the morning or when we are getting ready for dinner

Re: Daily News
Like most others I will read the "daily news-sheet" provided and watch the occasional news broadcast on the TV - unless there is something really important happening in the world such as 9/11, when I don't think we left the cabin for most of the day.

I take no notice of home news unless it is a BIG story. As for buying a newspaper, why bother, i know whats in it. 'The country is going to rack and ruin and overrun by foreigners'.

Never buy a newspaper but Mike always picks up the ship daily news sheet from reception. We always have to look at Sky News once a day, Mike's interest while away, not mine... maybe part of being a newsagent!

Re: Daily News
We get a daily local paper at home but when we're on holiday I would prefer to forget about the news. My husband always gets the P&O news sheet every day but only for the sports news. We do take a mobile phone with us but only check it once a day in case any of the family need to get in touch with us . Also take our I pad , but only use it to check our e mails a couple of times during the cruise, as our son travels a lot with his job, and I like to keep track of where he is in the world . Wouldn't dream of looking at any news sites , as someone else said , if anything major were to happen I'm sure P&O would let us know.

Well I find the ships newspaper useless - its mainly sport. Always watch Sky news on the cabin TV first thing in the morning and last thing at night when available. Always buy a UK newspaper if we see one but wouldn't go looking for one. Next year we will be away for most of the general election campaign so will be glued to the TV over that.

We have never stayed in a cabin of a high enough grade to be loaned an iPad, but we do each take our own, and sometimes take them on deck to play games - off line I might add! Nobody has appeared to make an assumption that we were in any particular cabin and I have no intention of leaving mine in the cabin in case they do! It would never occur to me that anyone with an iPad didn't own it!

Re: Daily News
I'm afraid I'm one of those who enjoys the news. Whilst at home we only have weekend papers, I always watch the news on TV. Whilst on board there is limited news through Sky and there is the daily ship's paper but nothing of any real depth so it is a bit of a luxury to find a newspaper ashore despite the extra cost. Usually they are reasonably current so they make a good read.
If there has been a footballer match (and we have won) the search for a newspaper takes on a different dimension. If we have lost I'm not too bothered!

Why would anyone buy a newspaper when they are on holiday?
If something notable or life changing happened you would hear about it.

Re: Daily News
We do tend to keep up to date with the TV news when on a cruise, as well as the daily ships news sheet, but my wife cannot pass up the opportunity to buy a UK newspaper if we see one. Yes they are much more expensive than at home but nowadays they are bang up to date since they are printed locally presumably via an internet link from the UK.

For anyone who wants/needs to have UK newspapers whilst away and have a Kindle then there are several papers that you can subscribe to and most have a free trial period - OK you can only download them when in port, but that is no different than only being able to get a paper (that may be a day or two old) when in port.

Re: Daily News
Hi Wolfie,
I'd never thought of that - someone trying to take it home! I simply thought (the emphasis I'm afraid being on the word 'simply') that it was in case the passengers in suites had a rip-roaring time in the bar and were too sozzled to remember where they'd put it (I've spent time in a Q1 wondering where the heck I've put something); or maybe they think that Q1 passengers are doddery old fogies with short memories!

Re: Daily News
We do not wish to have our holidays spoilt by reading a load of tosh else gloom n doom ... as long as OBF texts the ' key ' footy results I don't even need the Ship's news sheet
Talking of OBF ... is it an age thing, do you happen to know, that you old folk need to keep reading the news else watching it six times a day on the telly ?
