Spiders

Unread post by Jan Rosser »

I have a new pet - a spider has taken residence on the outside of my lounge window and has spun the most amazing web which is anchored between the window and a garden table and chair. I have checked and it is just a garden spider but has lovely markings on its body. This morning it has captured a fly almost as big as itself and a smaller bug of some kind and I watched it wrapping their bodies - they are definitely not escaping :lolno:

Luckily for the spider the window cleaner came last week so it will be undisturbed while it's feasting on its prisoners and I certainly shan't be touching it

Did you know it's the ones with the lovely markings that are the most deadly.

Stephen I didn't want to know that - thank goodness there is a double glazed window between me and "it"

I leave them well alone outdoors, but I am often in demand to catch them and put them outside, when Sue sees one in the bath, on the ceiling over the bed etc. I turn into a machismo with six pack, and devil may care appearance as I take them to the windows to throw them out, but quickly revert to moobs, muffin top, and dopey look as soon as they are gone. ;)

Take pity on them. If they get into a bath or a pair of boots they can't gat out and just sit there shivering with fright.

Take pity on them ?????? No way, if I see a spider (and I don't care where it is), if I can deal with it then I do - if not then I call for help, and beloved other half protects me from the nasty beasty.

I don't hold with all this putting them in a container and letting them go outdoors - firstly they might breed (MIGHT???), and secondly they might get cold or be bullied by a bigger beastie, so we put them out of our misery - end of story.

My main concern (and yes, I'm fully prepared for the cries of shock horror and surprise from some of you), is that I'm not harmed, the décor is not harmed and any ornaments etc remain in pristine condition.

If you want to live and thrive, let a spider run alive.

All spiders get very quickly dispatched from our house. If Tony isn't around to deal with them, I vacuum them up and make sure rhe end of the vacuum tubing is firmly closed!

I am petrified of them, especially after last week I woke up with a massive bite on my cheek, with two puncture marks about 1cm apart! It was painful and infected so I looked a mess for days. I have tried conkers and - so far - haven't seen any more, but I only have sufficient supplies for the bedroom and my bathroom. All other rooms are at risk

Anyone got any conkers going spare?
Gill

Hi Gill,

I didn't know that about conkers - so when I go out for a walk today I'll keep a look out for some.

I don't like spiders - sorry, but I know that they can bite, and do my best not to give them the opportunity.

Yes I am sure this was a spider bite, as I had seen a massive beast that disappeared behind my shower just the evening before.

The swelling and surrounding area was extremely painful, so I hope the conkers really do work.

The conkers only last a few days, you have to keep replenishing them. I seem to recall that someone's identified the actual substance and bottled it as a spray, to save the need to constantly replace conkers

I don't love them but neither do I hate them; they trap flies so they do some good.

I usually dispose of them, if they are in the house, via a piece of card and a glass and release them.

My daughter is overrun with them at the moment - apparently they come into the house searching for the female spider? She purchased a small trap - it looks like a little house so the spider runs in and then it gets stuck with the gluey substance impregnated on it.

Living in the countryside - the smaller ones don't bother me and I also leave a few to gobble up the flies.
