Tax Discs Are No More
Anyone else removed the tax disc from their car now that they are no longer required?

Re: Tax Discs Are No More
I'd forgotten all about it until I renewed my tax online a couple of days ago and got the message that I would not be sent a disc.
My smart little brushed aluminium disc holder is now surplus to requirements!

I took delivery of a new car on 8 September and was issued with a tax disc with instructions to cut it out as discs were no longer being issued with perforations (supposedly to save money) and I am leaving it there until it expires.

Mine doesn't expire until March so I will be leaving it where it is for now.

Re: Tax Discs Are No More
Mine is going today. It passed the MOT on Monday, and Mercedes loaned me a new top of range C class for the day while it was serviced. Automatic, a brilliant gearbox and steering column shift, rear camera, auto stop start in traffic. So smooth. When I collected mine at the end of the day it felt positively neanderthal!
Then yesterday 7 miles from home, mine flashed up a message about oil level. I stopped immediately, put out the warning triangle, and lifted the bonnet. After waiting for it to cool down I checked the oil level and it was way too high. The local Mercedes garage sent out two guys, and we drove down to their palatial glass cathedral of consumerism, where they drained some off, amidst profuse apologies from them, and with Sue muttering darkly about wasted time. I'm off to check the level wth the engine stone cold now.

Well, it is going to look weird and feel weird, but the next time we drive we'll remove the tax disc.
I reckon there are going to be 'tears before bedtime' - I don't think it's a good idea.

The chauffeur did mention this to me, but I said 'it expires at the end of the month so it can stay where it is'.

problem is, that I suspect if I try to take my tax disc holder off the window, it will leave a very sticky mess in it's place. so as it goes till march next year that's where it stays for now.
regards gilly.

Does anyone know if we still get the reminder letter through the post to renew the tax?

If they are trying to save money, which I believe is the main aim of doing away with the tax disc then it would be more sense to just email the renewal notice. There can't be that many people these days that don't have an email account.

Re: Tax Discs Are No More
One of the better consequences of all the DVLA changes is the way that they are now handling SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) rules.
I did not realise the changes until I went online to check when my SORN declarations were due for renewal, I found that they no longer have to be renewed every year but now only once. After registration for SORN, it will stay registered until you want to put the vehicle back on the road. If you want to put the car back on the road.
This gets rid of three major problems for the general public.
Namely:
1: Those who inadvertently fall fowl of disposing of their car to a door knocker scrap dealer who does not issue to the DVLA a scrappage certificate, thus requiring the owner to register a SORN every year until they die.
2. Those who work abroad for more than a year at a time and who fall fowl of the SORN rules and get a hefty fine.
3. Those like me who tinker with old cars. Buy cars to strip down to rebuild others. I have to juggle with three SORN declarations just to keep up to date with my hobby.
By the way, there is no statutory rule for the DVLA to advise anyone that their “Car Tax”, “SORN” statement etc. is due for renewal. The onus is on the owner and non-notification is not accepted as an excuse in court.
Great news now for us car tinkerers!!!

Hi John,
You reckon that there is no statutory rule for the DVLA to remind people that their car tax is due - but I bet you that they will remind the motoring public; firstly because it's revenue, and secondly because without the requisite reminder containing a relevant reference number renewing may not be possible - which puts the ball firmly in their court to act.
Oh well - we'll have to wait and see, but I will diary when ours falls due, and keep a look out. It'll probably be an email they send I suppose.

I have just renewed my tax due 1 Oct so it was the first month of the new system. I did get a letter about 5 Sep reminding me of the renewal.
However, if you pay on line, you don't get a receipt unless you fill in the optional email address. They then send an email confirmation.

If you renew online, there is the option to enter an email address to which a confirmation will be sent, but you can also print off the last screen of the renewal process showing the renewal reference.

Beware, the Police have a very sophisticated Reg plate reader that separates the "payers" from the "non payers" in a milo second, which is streets ahead of the aged Tax Disc/Insurance codgers
Pay up with a smile, you know it makes sense, probably the lubberly whatsit Travellers will still be ex gratia of payments . . .
