Re: Paying for plastic
an interesting debate
a couple of points to consider
firstly ALL plastics bags can be made biodegradable at source, but the supermarkets are unwilling to pay the higher cost of the bags
secondly there is a big difference between biodegradable and compostable, anything organic is biodegradable given enough time and plastics are basically oil derivatives, so are given enough time, biodegradable but not compostable, for this you need biopolymers
thirdly the reason for the tax , in the main, is due to lazy selfish people throwing their rubbish in the streets or into the sea or rivers and not being responsible
lastly and perhaps the most important, plastics bags cost fractions of pennies to make, so the 5p or whatever is a stealth tax with some of it going to the supermarket and some of it the government
like many inanimate objects people blame the bags etc for the problem
the problem is stupid people being careless and lazy, much the same as any other man made global problem, this is no different

You will need to explain how you get a bar code for "your" loose veggies in your Tesco, or do you rely on a supervisor to key in the data, and wait and wait and wait........david63 wrote:Works fine in Tescotowny44 wrote:This system does not work in most UK supermarkets for loose fresh vegetables.david63 wrote:What's all this checkout business? PS Why are you still here and not on the way to the airport?

Customer scales are provided which spew out a ticket to slap on your bag of fruit/veg. They're the same as the scales that staff use for orders via online shopping.
The scanners are also the same as the ones the staff use. It saves all the palaver of putting items on the conveyor belt and then packing them into bags.
I did ask if it meant a loss of jobs but there are so many idiots using the scan and shop they have plenty of staff to help those who need it.
I find it quick and convenient.

Works fine for loose fresh vegetables in the supermarkets we scan and shop in, there are paper bags in the fresh vegetables section for you to use, you then weigh them on scales provided which prints out a price ticket. Scan the price ticket and put them in your own bag.Delboy wrote:towny44 wrote:david63 wrote:What's all this checkout business? We scan and go wherever we can, saves all the messing around at the tills of unloading and repacking again. You may get the odd random check, although never had one at Sainsbury's, had the odd check on a few items at Tesco, but never had a full shopping check.

Unless I've missed them our Tesco must still be in the dark ages, but I don't think they have them yet.wolfie wrote:towny44 wrote:You will need to explain how you get a bar code for "your" loose veggies in your Tesco, or do you rely on a supervisor to key in the data, and wait and wait and wait........david63 wrote:Works fine in Tescotowny44 wrote:This system does not work in most UK supermarkets for loose fresh vegetables.

All the stores I have been in which have scan & go have them, but they can easily be missed, are normally kept at the end of the rows of vegetables. Just put your item on the scale, select product button, ie lemons, it then weighs, prices them and prints labelUnless I've missed them our Tesco must still be in the dark ages, but I don't think they have them yet.
