... but it does confirm that previously hidden dangers can exist, it could of course happen again in the future.

Re: Should e-ciggs be banned
I saw something on the telly the other night about e-cigs. It showed a group of men sitting round a table puffing on these things. I thought what a load of twats they looked.

The problem is that these devices and the nicotine solutions they contain are totally unregulated, so unscrupulous manufacturers can put anything they like in them.
That said, I have no doubt that the majority of them are safer than the cigarettes the devotees (addicts?) would otherwise be using.

Re: Should e-ciggs be banned
Dunno. Many years ago, herbal cigarettes were popular (I'm not talking about wacky baccy, this was mainstream over-the-counter stuff) and it was touted that these things were much better than conventional cigarettes. It was commented that it had taken decades to understand the health dangers of ordinary tobacco, so how could the manufacturers of the herbal ones say so quickly that these were safe. I think the same applies here with vaping/e-cigs. Have sufficient studies been undertaken to ascertain what risks they impose? Not so ancient mariner wrote:Manoverboard wrote:

When I said "vaping/e-cigs", I was not implying that they were the same thing, merely that both involve inhalation of.... what?

Re: Should e-ciggs be banned
e cigs use cartridges that contain, nicotine, vegetable oil , polypropylene glycol and flavouring, they produce a mist, not smoke or vapour....big difference
Vapeing is the use of liquids, which can depending on where and who makes , can contain dozens of different additives, they all look like a gay wizards little wand, not a cigarette and produce clouds of vapour
E-liquid, e-juice or simply "juice", refers to a liquid solution that when heated by an atomizer produces mist. The main ingredients of e-liquids are usually a mix of propylene glycol (PG), glycerin (G), and/or polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400), sometimes with differing levels of alcohol mixed with concentrated or extracted flavourings; and optionally, a variable concentration of tobacco-derived nicotine.[9][77] Most e-cigarette liquids contain nicotine, but the level of nicotine is chosen by the consumer.[12] E-liquid that does not contain nicotine is also available.[12] With observable differences among various brands, drugs like rimonabant for weight loss and amino tadalafil for erectile dysfunction are included in the cartridge solution.[78]
The solution is often sold in bottles or pre-filled disposable cartridges, or as a kit for consumers to make their own eJuices. Components are also available to modify or boost their flavour, nicotine strength, or concentration of e-liquid.[79] Pre-made e-liquids are manufactured with various tobacco, fruit, and other flavors,[1] as well as variable nicotine concentrations (including nicotine-free versions). The standard notation "mg/ml" is often used in labelling for denoting nicotine concentration, and is sometimes shortened to a simple "mg".[80] In surveys of regular e-cigarette users the most liked e-liquids had a nicotine content of 18 mg/ml, and largely the favorite flavors were tobacco, mint and fruit.[11] A refill bottle can contain up to 1 g of nicotine.[78

Re: Should e-ciggs be banned
Thank you for that, DK.
My point remains, though - the user is still inhaling something. My concern (not that I'd ever use the stuff myself) is that these products have not been sufficiently tested to ensure safety.

SS
its the same with anything new, the product information is new, so it will take time to collate the available data in order to make a definitive statement
also there is genuine concern over cheap or fake goods entering the market, the same as with any other product, the best advise is to buy from a reputable company and if it seems too cheap, it is probably because it is rubbish, like most knock offs

Quite so, but as these things seem to be being touted as a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes, do "they" know that they are safe(r)?

Re: Should e-ciggs be banned
given that a normal cigarette can contain over 4000 different additives and compounds, many of which are the cause of cancer and an e cig only contains nicotine, vegetable oil and glycerol, than I would say they are less harmful than a cigarette, no tar, no carcinogens no nasty additives etc

A lot safer than the motor vehicle fumes we are forced to inhale on a daily basis. However this should lessen when all those so concerned for their own and other peoples health, adopt electrical vehicles as their mode of transport.

Re: Should e-ciggs be banned
In an ideal world they would be banned - but we don't have one of those do we?
So I would say: Not banned - but regulated. They are not harmless, but they are a lot less harmful than the obvious alternative source of nicotine for those addicted to this drug.
