It was the other way round! Literally! 23rd December 1961 outside Home and Colonial Stores Leighton Buzzard High Street, at about 3.30pm and less than 20 minutes after I had been 'stood up' by another. I was a push over. :lol:

I certainly didn't 'put myself about'. When you worked for Marconi, home leave was very rare. I was quite a shy and polite boy in those days. One of my old girl friends remembers that; "you used to blush." I still do. :roll:

No, they were a bit like girls Moby, 'one in every port'. The Liverpool and Glasgow ones were best, really nice guys. sadly London left much to be desired in the charm and politeness area.

The days when we had thriving communities.

Marconi and Crittall windows were 2 local companies based in Witham, with Crittalls building a village to house its workers.

Nearby was Courtaulds who also had their own housing.

The good side was a job and home for life but not so good if you lost your job.
