Three Piece Suites For Sale

Comes with leading makers Bentley and Roll Royce logo. Slight water damage. Buyer collects :!: ;)

I suppose it depends on how much those cars have been exposed to water. A TV programme called Channel Patrol (10 part series) showed in episode 9, cars being loaded onto a similar ship at Southampton. It showed all the cars on board were lashed down, so doubt if they have moved.

I don't know how water tight each deck is.

I would add we purchased a new suit last year, expensive and very comfortable, so not interested in another

There's only two things that make a ship capsize in calm water: - Flooding, or cargo shifting.

There's only two things that make a ship capsize in calm water: - Flooding, or cargo shifting.
It may not necessary mean the cargo has shifted, as the TV programme showed cars are firmly lashed down.

From an early indication it would appear the vessel never suffered any loss of propulsion or steerage nor was it any kind of pilot or navigational error. Early indications are that poor ballast/bunker tank management could be to blame or something went wrong when moving ballast. A large amount of bunker fuel was allowed to drain from the port side over to starboard at the moment the vessel was negotiating the turn to port around the west bramble cardinal bouy. This, combined with slack ballast tanks caused the vessel to take on a very pronounced list to starboard.

...she had made a full 180 degree turn round to port and was listing at approx 50 degrees. The pilot deliberately beached the car carrier in an effort to avoid a potential capsize situation.

It will be interesting to see the eventual salvage operation when it happens, after the logistics are sorted out. An opportunity to view the operation at close quarters with local, and probably national, media coverage.

Well done RNLI for the safe rescue of the crew. Lives are more precious than some luxury cars but I bet some are wishing for the worst and hoping some may float ashore if things go awry. Then they can exchange their BMW for a Roller :lol:

You are correct, I should have made myself clearer. something (but not necessarily cargo) must have shifted to upset the equilibrium of the ship. It may also be that the cargo was poorly loaded, resulting in too much weight too high in the ship, so she listed excessively when executing the sharp turns around Bramble Bank, exascerbating the draining of bunker fuel or ballast over to the starboard side: - but that is only speculation at this stage.

There's so many simple errors in the photo captions, that it's obvious that the hack who wrote them does not know the first thing about ships and maritime activities.

I understand the cargo includes a number of JCBs. My plan would be to use them to dig a big hole on one side for it to slide into on the next high tide, righting itself!

Read this today

The salvage master tasked with refloating the Costa Concordia cruise liner, Capt Nicholas Sloane, said salvors face a "critical situation".

He said the next 24 hours are "crucial for the local conditions and the wash".

"The main thing is to stabilise and bring her upright," he said.

"The next 24 hours are critical to see the behaviour of the sandbanks, whether the sand migrates away from the starboard side or the port side.

"The tidal conditions could cause some erosion of the sand itself."

Salvage experts from Svitzer boarded the ship on Monday and are carrying out an assessment to form a rescue plan.

Capt Sloane said it was "unlikely" the incident was caused by human error and was possibly an electrical fault with sensors which control the ballast, or ballast pumps.

He was in charge of refloating the Costa Concordia cruise ship, which sank off the coast of Tuscany in Italy in 2012, killing 32 people.

Ingar Skiaker, chief executive of Hoegh Autoliners, said in a press conference after the incident the crew deliberately ran the ship aground to avoid further damage.

There are 1,400 cars on board, including 1,200 Jaguar and Land Rover products, 65 Minis as well as 105 JCB machines.Eric Williams, whose company Williams Shipping is working with the salvage team, said he was told the cars were well strapped down and not as badly damaged as feared.
