Quite looking forward to this - but will it show us what we want to see, or will it just be what some non-cruising type thinks makes for good viewer ratings?

Re: Mighty Ships - Cruise Ships
I thought that the program didn't cover all of the cruise experience, and that either there wasn't much entertainment or if there was it wasn't worth a mention.
Also I find it curious that the passengers drink and socialise in the corridors!!!!! Isn't there a bar?
The restaurant didn't look up to much, and the catering staff were busy trying to buy good all the time - that doesn't give me much confidence in this mob.
The destinations were fabulous - but I now have no intention of diving etc., and the excursions didn't sound up to much.
I can't recall there being any coverage of accommodation - so in general overall it was an interesting watch but not all that informative.

I think the socialising outside the cabin thing was a one off thing, at the start of the cruise, a sort of get to know your neighbours thing. I imagine it's a Paul Gauguin tradition.Boris+ wrote:

I quite liked that they were sourcing fresh local produce, rather than only having frozen packaged stuff from the USA
I thought the captain was good looking !
Next week, they are featuring a different ship. I think it looks like an interesting series.

When I set up the "record series" link after the programme ended, it appeared that there are four more showings before the next episode featuring a different ship.
They kept on about how huge the ship is - didn't look any bigger than the smaller mid-size ships to me.
I, too, would be worried about quality control with the food.
We, too, were puzzled about the social drinkiepoos in the corridor with the captain.
Not a ship I'd want to sail on.

Wouldn't it just be like eating local produce in a restaurant in port?Silver_Shiney wrote:I, too, would be worried about quality control with the food.
.
They did comment that there was enough beef and lobster on board anyway, so it wouldn't be compulsory to eat the locally sourced items. Also, I would think they have regular contacts amongst the fishermen, so they would be trusted suppliers
But a locally caught piece of fish, simply grilled would a nice treat, I would think.

True, Gill, but I got the impression last night that they were buying stuff without knowing the vendors (I'm sure I heard the chef say he didn't know what the mangoes underneath the top layer were like)

Well, it's caused a bit of discussion here at home, and we both like the underwater activity - I know I said I wouldn't do it nowadays, but I've just accepted a challenge to try it.
Now to hide the bank card to prevent any accidental Paul Gaugin bookings!!!!

Corridor party is a way to meet your neighbours. If it is not to your taste you dont have to go. You get a glass of something, champagne, wine or soft drink, and canapés. The Captain , Deputy Captain, CD all come and chat. It lasts for about half an hour, and then everyone returns to their cabin/suite and gets ready for the evening. It only works on small vessels. You couldn't make it work where the corridor is half a mile long!!

Yip, I understand what they were doing, but it's not for me.
Still fancy maybe giving the underwater bit a go.

all a bit dull really
Dad did the underwater stuff a few years ago, he enjoyed the underwater scooter very much and got chased by a shoal of fish, playing in the bubbles

All a bit disappointing really
Hardly mighty ships so far, although nice ships.
This week's is Azamara so I'm genuinely interested in this one as we may give them a go some day.

Should be interesting.

Re: Mighty Ships - Cruise Ships
Not quite sure why the program is being called 'Mighty Ships' when it's mainly about the ports of call. It would be nice to get a good look round the inside of the ship for a change.
I didn't go allot on last weeks program. Yes, it was a good looking vessel, but I thought the ports of call were very disappointing.
Each to their own though.

I somehow got the impression that the catering provision was a bit 'catch as catch can' - and I don't like that.
Looking forward to the program tonight.

Re: Mighty Ships - Cruise Ships
Mighty Ships .... definition presumably being that ALL Cruise Ships are ' mighty ' relatively, which of course they are.
I ( we ) enjoyed the program last week because of the unusual destinations but most were beach inspired which is not our scene these days. The Cruise Line itself was not, I suspect, to our tastes.
Azamara, however, we thought was brilliant ... small ship(s), nice atmosphere / can do culture on board, great food etc plus I noticed this morning that they also have a neat flight booking service as in you chose who to fly with rather than the Cruise Line, albeit at a greater expense of course. So, subject to finding a suitable itinerary we will deffo book one of theirs.

Having cruised to Singapore Bangkok and Saigon and being in container ports miles from our destination. This coupled with the overnights in port looked a great experience. Solstice the sister ship of Eclipse (which I didn't enjoy) will provide some interest next week.

Re: Mighty Ships - Cruise Ships
Just watched last nights program. Loved it. It was right up my street apart from the rough weather
I liked the look alike Adonia ship, the crew, the itinerary, food, everything, apart from the 8ft cheese ball cruise director.
I'm not a model boat enthusiast, but I bet I wouldn't have come out of that shop without buying one. They looked wonderful.
Yep, this could be one for the future
