Panasonic DVD Recorder Reset Question

Unread post by Stephen »

Are there any Panasonic DVD recorder owners out there (I think Moby is) that can answer a question for me please.

If I do a factory reset on my Panasonic DMR-EX89EB-K DVD recorder will I lose all the saved programs on the hard drive.

Indeedee ... I own a couple, including the DMR EX85.

A factory reset would certainly clear ALL set-up aspects that you have amended over the years but it surely takes a ' Format ' to clear the programs that have been recorded and presently reside on the DVD's Hard Drive.

If it were me I would copy anything of note onto a Disc but I would also contact Panasonic's excellent Customer Support as a first step to be totally certain about this step into the unknown.

Why are you doing it anyway, perhaps there is another solution to your problem ?

Stephen, whilst not a Panasonic owner I do know that if you revert to factory settings on my Humax Freesat I lose everything I have saved regarding TV recordings. The same happened to our Sky box when we were with them. So, I would have thought a revert to default settings will do the same on your DVD recorder.

Thanks Moby
I also have the DMR-EZ49V. Handy for when double recording and also transferring from the old VHS format (I have loads) onto DVDS.

I have been in contact with Panasonic, and although their customer service has improved they do take a long while to reply.

On the Humax you would lose the info relating to future recordings but would you actually lose those that have already been recorded ?

In my Panasonic Opins re ' Shipping Condition ', ie ' Factory Reset ', it states

" All settings accept for the security levels with the associated password and the time settings and the Owner ID, are reset to the factory default settings. "

Relates therefore to set-up and there are NO warnings about losing recorded data ... I would still check with Panasonic though

Just as well I checked.

Just called a Panasonic store in Colchester and they confirmed I would lose everything doing a factory reset.

When you think about it, it would wipe everything as you are resetting it as if you had just brought it.

Bit of a pain though, but can't be helped.

I always use 'Guide Plus' for program recordings.
I was noticing that quite often I was missing the ending of some recorded programs, and getting the evils from the boss, as if I had done it deliberately ;) . So after contacting Panasonic support they asked me to check some settings.

The main setting they mentioned to check was set to 'ON' was the 'TV Guide Download'. I checked and found that it was already set to 'ON' but greyed out so I could not access it. This is when they asked me to do a factory reset.

I did a factory reset for an older Panasonic model a couple of years back and that did not re-format the hard disc so you could be OK, but no promises....!

Too true blue, I have all the colours and all the sizes but only in 5 makes.

Panasonic, Sony, Humax plus Kenwood and Neff .... if they don't make it then I doubt that I have, or even want, one

Mind you, it might be preferable to miss the end of some of Watford's recent games.....?

As I mentioned to Panasonic support, I thought that the 'Guide Plus' was supposed to compensate for early start and late finishes, which is why they asked me to check certain settings.

Well someone doesn't know what they're talking about, either the local Panasonic shop or Panasonic support. I just had a reply from Panasonic support saying that I will not lose any saved programs on the hard drive. I'm still not taking any chances though and am just backing up the last couple of films.

Fortunately I have a few DVD RAM RW discs which record in high speed. They cut down the backing up time to a fraction of what it would normally take. Recommend them if your unit can play them.

Email from Panasonic support.

In response to your enquiry, I would like to explain that the reset back to factory settings, the Shipping Condition will affect only the settings on the unit, thus the recordings that you have stored on the device will not be erased.

Just in case anyone out there has an old Panasonic TV... You may remember how I had trouble with the electronic programme guide last year.
Last week they finally sent me a software upgrade module which I had to insert in the back of the telly. Hey presto it worked and I have finally got a fully working guide again. Just wish they could have sent it to me months ago!
