Dear oh dear, oh dear, oh dear, oh dear

Ref sent off our soopadoopa Italian defender for felling a Bournemouth player, on the basis that he prevented a goal scoring opportunity as he was the last defender. Foul certainly and a yellow card at worst.

This was after 28 seconds and best of all he wasn't even the last man ... card will doubtless be rescinded on Monday but it didn't really help the flow of the game nor our chance to win it.

Deffo, imo, time for the 4th official to view and then review all controversial incidents such as this and to advise the ref of his / her findings, but ref gets last word .... maybe.

Strangely ...

As luck would have it, it was the second season in a row that the Italian had been dismissed at the same ground – last season’s red card being a case of mistaken identity, with the punishment later being rescinded. :wtf:

I thought the number of defenders was irrelevant (in terms of the wording of the rule). If a "clear goalscoring opportunity" is denied, then a red card is issued. The ournemouth player was running directly at goal, in a central area, and it did look to me like he was odds-on to score had the defended not fouled him?

We have got a lunchtime kick-off against the dirty club along the M62. Hope that we can get a positive result, as they spanked us earlier in the season at their place. We are playing much better now, so hope to return the favour.

Time for video replay on controversial decisions. They have them in rugby, cricket and tennis. They already have the technology so why not use it? We had a penalty awarded against us the other week for our centre half heading the ball in the penalty area!!!
It's about time the boring old f**ts in the FA took the sport into the 21st century.

We've a tough match at Manure although for some reason we seem to play better against the top teams than those lower down. Anything could happen and another 5-3 would be out of this world!!! 1-0 to us will suffice with Rooney sent off as a bonus.

There definitely are grounds to consider video replays, particularly for incidents where the ball has gone dead. There's enough wasted time in the modern game already, that it would make little negative impact IMO.

I often wonder how much actual playing time there is bearing in mind the length of time it takes to take a throw in, free kick or goal kick. Then you have to allow for players rolling around on the ground, arguing with the ref, goalkeeper deciding which side to take a goal kick, strolling off when substituted etc. Even with time added on I reckon you'd be lucky to get 75 minutes of actual playing time in. Maybe time to have one of those big clocks as in ice hockey which stops when play stops.
Throw ins are particularly frustrating. By the time they have decided who is going to take the throw in, dried the ball, feigned to go one way then another, waved to the rest of the team, crept up the touchline, been brought back by the linesman, made up their mind and then thrown it can take ages. Is this what supporters have paid (a lot of money) to watch? Time it was stamped out.

Rant over!!

A thing that has crept into the lower leagues is the 'mystery injury'

Quite often away teams, particularly if they are winning or drawing, go down and demand treatment when no one seems to have touched them?
It eats up a few more precious minutes and it's what the pro's call game management.
I don't suppose the Premier clubs can get away with it because of all the cameras at matches, but down here in the basement it's rife.

I wonder if the refs are now getting wise to this because we often have six or seven minutes added on now.

Perhaps it's just as well they don't take me up on the idea. My wife would wonder where the hell I'd been. She seems to think you can be out of the ground, walked back to the car and driven home all within 10 minutes of the match ending.

And that's another thing!!!!
With five minutes to go in a match and a team is winning by the odd goal they suddenly start to play 'keep ball'. There is no intention to pose a threat, just to 'run the clock down'. This is usually followed by taking the ball into the corner to waste a few more seconds.
Even if it's my team doing it I hate the practice and wish there was some way it could be outlawed. OK, it's not breaking any laws but is that what I pay good money to go and see? If you went to the theatre and they padded out a play for 15 minutes idly wandering about the stage there would be ructions so why put up with it at a football match.
Time wasting, whether it's 'running the clock down', 'game management' or whatever title the profession has attached to it should be outlawed so we get a full 90 minutes of action.

Mainly the result, but it is worrying that Smith had to be airlifted to hospital.

What happened to him?
Lost 3-1 to an offside goal, a fumble by the keeper and an own goal!! Fair result though as we only started to play football in the last 10 minutes. Up to then they dominated the play and we resorted to hoofing it away. You can't do that in the Prem!!!

Yep and I've just lined up a chilled bottle of Viognier to achieve just that

Yahoo says, re Smith ...

Sharp, linked with a loan move to Ipswich, nodded home the dramatic winner in the 90th minute. As he scored, Smith appeared to collide with goalkeeper Joe Murphy. Earlier reports about ' after ' the game were clearly wrong it seems.

ps ... Eddie Howe says the red card was very harsh and it spoilt a game that the players had been looking forward to.

pps ... Well done you Cherries

ppps ... Appeal against the red card has been lodged

Meanwhile ..... Gillingham FC are still waiting for a manager

Four weeks now.

At least no one can acuse old Scally of being impetuous .

I think he's still trying to convince Sir Alex to come out of retirement. :lolno:

A weekend of mixed results for sure.

We scraped in with a 1:0 win against Blackburn and the 3 points are well received but others, inc Foxy, were less fortunate.

The usual story for us. Plenty of chances not put away in a match we had to win. The only bright light is nobody around us won either but looks like it will be the Championship for us next season. The good news is at least I'll be able to get a match ticket.

The tide has clearly turned for us.

A comfortable 2-0 win over Sheffield Utd although we did leave it late but there was only one team trying to win the game.

Just goes to show that it was the tactics, not the players.

Mid-table obscurity and I'm a happy bunny.

Up the Gills

oooh! and a new manager announced before the game .
