I don't seem to have any of these problems with TalkTalk............................... and if I do my little Asian friends come to the rescue............... :oops: :thumbup:

I believe you Foxy, I am the same with Scottish power, they always give me the cheapest fixed price deal, and I enjoy excellent customer service.

After reading your comment David I asked my son, who just had TalkTalk superfast fibre broadband installed what he thought and surprise surprise he said surfing the web was no faster, but he thought maybe downloading box sets from Sky via his broadband had improved.
So I think I will just stay with my steam powered free broadband from Sky, which has actually improved from about 2mb to 5mb in the last 2 years, part due to a renewal of the 30 yr old outside line and some improvements in the local exchange and the nearby junction box.
I guess I will leave infiniti to the gamers and the geeks who must have the latest gismos.

After our recent saga with BT, which is yet to be resolved after 2 months, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole, as the saying goes.

The saga does not include the damage to the front paths of our house and drive, the damage to paintwork, and more, as a result of their insistence that we needed a new line into the house and they would do it their way, whatever the damage that ensued. Days waiting in for promised phone calls and engineer visits that never materialised, hours spent on the phone with no result and being transferred to umpteen people who could not resolve a simple issue.

As some people may remember my husband flirted with the idea of changing to Talk Talk from Virgin but after all the "don't touch with a bargepole" comments from people on here (apart from Foxy) he agreed to stay with Virgin - but he did phone Virgin and say he was thinking of leaving as Talk Talk were offering a good deal.

Well he got an update with Virgin - a new box and hub which means we can now record which we couldn't before and at a lower price than we had been playing. Very happy with the new box - very convenient to be able to record - and to be able to set a whole series to record - even Wolf Hall which John enjoys but I find rather tedious and I thought I'd like it as I usually enjoy any history type programmes. Anyway a vote for Virgin and even their customer service has improved - got a call a few days after the new installation to ask if everything was ok.

We have a small cottage in Dorset and have Plus Net there which has always been good - just for phone and broadband - we have Freesat Tv.

Thanks Moby - we must have a dish - I think the previous owner left his Sky dish behind. Just how it all connects I don't know but my son-in-law is a computer programmer and he seems to know about these things. Anyway Freesat seems to work - don't know that I'd choose it but considering we don't use it that often it's fine.

Having recently changed to fibre I can tell you the wiring in the house can also make a whole world of a difference.

The socket in the room with my computers is about 20ft from the main socket and I could only get 21Mbs on it. If I plugged the router into the master socket I was getting 29Mbs but if I dismantled the master socket and plugged it into the test socket (behind the front plate) I was getting 38Mbs (the max my line supports). An engineer came out replaced the main socket which meant I was able to get 38Mbps on that socket.

A couple of Powerlink plugs (£25) and I now get full 38Mbps at my computer.

No problem then :clap:

There are however several parts of Dorset that are unable to get decent Freeview signals so a dish is their only option, with or indeed without SKY.

right, router has arrived (given a time of 7am - 6pm yesterday for delivery and they said it'll fit through your letter box - it arrived 2 mins after we went out at 7.15pm , and it didn't fit so OH had to go to the main sorting office this morning to collect it).

the instructions appear to say - disconnect old broadband, plug in router to existing connections and the wireless dongle will pick it up.
Only need to enter the password on the bottom of the router and Robert's Mummy's Bro...

Is it really that simple?

Read the opdoc is my advice ... I believe that there may be a requirement to install it in a specific order.

assuming opdoc is the instruction booklet - I did and that's what it seems to say

Connect to the Internet
Then power up the Router / Hub
Then connect the Computer
... and finally to launch a Browser.

I thought that you had to wait for the exchange to "switch you over" before you could do anything with the new router

I got home from work to find a dead router, so changed to the new one - apart from the plug needing an adapter cos there wasn't enough clearance below - all worked immediately.

however OH is still waiting for the email ( to his office email) to tell him we've changed over!
