Another man's rubbish......
I don't suppose many of you would lower yourself by rummging around it bins but l was out walking the dog this morning and there before my eyes was a skip brimming with lots of intresting things.....quick knock on the door and yes!... help yourself mate, came the reply.
Well it just so happened l'd been looking for some timber to make some lawn edging boards (keeps nice sharp edges round your boarders) anyway, after about five minutes l was laden with six planks plus a wooded bow backed chair, which when stripped will look the bees knees.
This has got me thinking about what you may have found whilst out walking?
Regards
OL

Oh so it was you on the tele this morning.
Headlines.
Local vagrant seen skipping with timber and chair.
When asked what his plans were he replied, 'no plans guv, didn't think I needed any for a self build'.

Stephen...I must admit to looking a bit rough in the mornings, but how the hell was I to know the double glazed window frames were there waiting to be installed?

Around 1987 I found a flymo hover mower in a skip - and took it home. Apart from the blade looking as though somebody had attempted to mow the rockery, it was in full working order - and with a replacement blade it lasted me the best part of 20 years!

Your'e talking my language now Onelife, Cheryl and the grand kids cringe when we approach a builders skip I just can't resist a peep inside. It is amazing what builders throw in the skip rather than take it back to the yard, but the customer has paid for it so they aren't out of pocket.
I built a large workshop at the top of my garden from stuff I retrieved from skips, it has 100 mm insulation on floor, walls and roof which all came from skips. The problem is builders merchants only sell materials by the pack or pallet and unless the builder has good storage facilities he has nowhere to keep these surplus materials. I stumbled upon a kitchen fitter about to skip a full set of kitchen units before he refitted a new kitchen into a house that was built only four years previous so a quick word with him and the the house owner it was gone in two trailer loads. Five days later it was sold and fitted in a friends house renovation project making two happy fellows.
Always ask permission before taking anything out of a skip though.

HI Ray,
Unfortunately the days of popping down to your local tip and coming back with something useful are long gone due to restrictions...shame as l have found some fantastic things over the years, one of which was a cupboard larder which still stands in my sisters kitchen.....would probably cost in excess of £350 to replace.
Now you'll understand l can't disclose where this place is (don't want you sniffing around)
but when holidaying in Wales l often pop down to the local tip where things are sorted and anything of percived value is set aside for purchase (nothing over a couple of quid). Anyway, popped in last year and came back with 4 quality dinning plates and two serving platters which started life in some hotel in London.
Hate car boot sales but love skips and tips.
Btw.....agree....always knock first
....less of course you can pop back at 3 in the morning...
Joking!
Regards
Keith

The tip near me is the same as the one in Wales Onelife, it is franchised out by the council and there are quite a few staff waiting to see what you are bringing in and filter the recyclable (or re-sellable ) stuff out. They always wave me through because they know I never throw anything decent away, but a couple of the old hands often come to me and say I've got something at the back of the shed that might interest you. Cheryl says I dread you coming back from the tip because you sometimes come back with more than you take.
When my son lived in Spain I was in tip heaven there when we went out to visit him, there is so much waste out there by developers. Our lad would come home from work and say to his mum "what's the skip monster brought back today ?" he didn't moan about the repairs and alterations I did though.
