Light Bulbs

Unread post by Stephen »

Why is it so difficult to get a light bulb of the same wattage of the one you want to replace these days.
No doubt Brussels Sprout has been medlin again.

They all seem to be 42, 65 etc watts.

Fortunately, there is a little shop in our town that sells nothing but light bulbs of all shapes and sizes, AND of the old style wattage.

Strangely enough I have not had to buy any of the new fangled lamps yet, we still have stocks of them given to us by the various power companies we have used, and there are still some old ones in use which must be 10 years old by now.

Lumens seems to be the new currency, which ought to be logical as it is a measure of light rather than power consumption, but I must admit to finding it a bit baffling after all these years of watts. And having converted a lot of our lights to LEDs I really can't get used to the idea of 5 watt bulbs giving enough light for anything, but they do! I'm just assuming I'll be able to afford an extra cruise each year on all the money I'm saving

In my experience if it says something like '10W equivalent to 40W' then its light output is equivalent to a 10W incandescent bulb. After warming up for 10 minutes, that is.

I would tend to agree with you with regard to the original 'energy saving' bulbs. But the more recent LED bulbs are a huge improvement
on these, and every bit as bright as the old fashioned ones.

They are getting better but the light fromm the LEDs is harsh and at the wrong end of the spectrum. I should declare an interest here as I buy several million LEDs a year, not for general lighting I hasten to add.

I would agree on the older ones QB. But the ones we've bought recently to replace halogen spots are indistinguishable from the old ones, other than in their consumption of electricity,

You can also get dimmable ones - though they are around twice the price of the non-dimmable equivalents.

You have to be careful which type you buy:

I'm surprised there's enough time between your cruises to squeeze another one in Mervyn :-)

We replaced the five spot light bulbs on our kitchen light last year for halogen ones that have a much lower wattage but give out the same if not more light output. £5+ each!!!!

Mind you, you could perform open heart surgery in our kitchen it's so bright now. In fact I believe the space station use our house as a marker

The only problem we've had is some FM radio interference from the 12v ones but hopefully thanks to good old Google and Maplin I will shortly have the cure. Which will wipe out the electricity saving for another year. But the polar bears will be safe

The polar bears were never in danger to start with, despite what Attenborough tells you.

I wasn't fooled either Shiney. But you can be flogged with environmentally friendly renewable birch twigs for being a climate change sceptic so I keep my head down.
