Any cabins left - Oriana

Unread post by Stephen »

Well done P&O

I wonder if I can get a booking in quick for tomorrow

Taken from Facelook ;)

A further update for passengers currently on board or due to join Oriana.

Having looked at the weather forecast, Oriana is planning to leave its current position around 7.30pm this evening to move to the Ocean Terminal. Once the ship is secured then luggage will be off loaded into the terminal. Those passengers who wish to leave the ship will then be able to do so around 9pm.

For those staying on board tonight all bars will remain open and there will be a full programme of entertainment as well as dinner with complimentary wine.

Passengers joining Oriana for the next cruise will be boarding from lunchtime tomorrow and will receive a 50% refund on the price of their holiday due to the 24 hour delay.

Notice to those passengers joining Oriana today.

Unfortunately due to the high winds gusting in excess of 50 knots we are unable to move Oriana to a terminal where we could embark passengers safely today. Therefore regrettably we have taken the decision to delay the next cruise by 24 hours. Both ports of call will be maintained and passengers will receive a refund of 50% of the price of their holiday.

Passengers on the current sailing will remain on board until later tonight or tomorrow. We sincerely apologise for the delay and disruption.

Oriana is still waiting for the winds to drop to a terminal where we can embark you safely. We are not expecting to begin boarding until early this evening so please plan your journey accordingly. We will continue to update you regularly and we will let you have a firm time as soon as possible. We are putting £30 per person on to your on board account so you can have lunch on your journey. Again we apologise for this delay.

Notice to those passengers joining Oriana today

Oriana has been unable to berth at Ocean Terminal this morning due to strong winds, we are awaiting a time for her to move to a terminal, where we can then disembark passengers from the last cruise. We will keep everyone updated but at the moment we do not have a confirmed embarkation time and therefore would ask you to delay your arrival until you hear from us again. We are sorry for this delay and will keep you updated via text message and here on Facebook.

Now it's just a thought but if you were on board doing a back to back would you get the OBC for being stuck on board for the first cruise and the money back for the second being shortened?

I've just had an email from our friends who should have boarded today, it appears that P&O have now secured overnight accommodation in hotels for all passengers ( or that's how I read it ) they are certainly in a hotel.

No mention of any moans in fact they said they met lots of nice people while they were waiting

An interesting question, there must be quite a few I would imagine.

Amazing, the weather is bad, so in the interests of safety they dont risk the ship, and still people moan. We really are a spoiled bunch these days.

Bad luck P&O. Damned if you do and damned if you dont.

Perhaps they are moaning about the weather? Let's not be too quick to jump to conclusions. ;)

Sling the moaners off and let them swim for it. More wine at dinner for the others.....albeit a bit late now

But then they'd only wash up on the shore near me and the Council would have to pay to dispose of them :(

They could have got them all ashore if they'd really tried. That's the trouble with these youngsters, we old-timers can teach them a thing or two:

I'm sure most accept that it would have been unsafe for Oriana to attempt to dock in the prevailing weather conditions.

What they are moaning about is P&O providing them with a 'sub-standard' ship that cannot dock whenever and wherever they want - regardless of what the weather may be throwing at them!

Since a tug, one of the toughest boats out there, actually sank in the Solent the night before, that would be an interesting and remarkable cruise ship!

Yes, that is poor in one of the most sheltered and safe ports in the world.

.......and what does that make the tug that capsized & sank in those same conditions?

Totally different circumstances. There's a big, big difference between a tug and a cruise liner. We shall have to wait for the official investigation but the usual cause for a tug sinking is 'girting' which is when the tow rope is at an unusual angle and the towed ship shifts suddenly. Fawley is well sheltered from the westerlies so the tug is unlikely to have sunk on its own.

Just as a matter of interest - did any other cruise ships succeed in docking in Southampton during this period?

Aidama was alongside at the QE2 terminal at the same time as Oriana.

Yes but it had to delay it's departure because of the high winds, which was another reason Oriana could not berth at its original dock.
