Naval History

Unread post by Ranchi »

For those with an interest in naval history, BBC2 Scotland are showing two programmes 1) The Dreadnoughts &. 2) U boat war. The first programme is scheduled for tonight at 9:00pm. You will have to use iPlayer ( or cable/satellite) if South of the border.

Frank,
The U boat programme is scheduled for next Tuesday at 9:00 pm. If your pic is slow streaming iPlayer, may I suggest that you download the programme ( that can be as slow as you like) a then watch the downloaded programme at your leisure ( within the next 28 days).
Good luck,
Steve
Ps I've only watched a bit of last nights prog; the presenter is a bit strident for my liking but the archive footage is good.

I will give it a try. Since my PC crashed last December it hasn't been the same, the people who repaired it had loads of bull and no ability as far as I can tell, sound has completely gone, I'll try it on Sue's Lap Top.

Frank,
Just watched it in iPlayer on the TV ( Virgin Media) to get the option to watch it I had to go into settings & change 'location' to 'Scotland' the programme was then available on TV. I could get it on a iPad OK ( I guess a laptop will be the same.
I found the programme interesting showing how Scaoa was developed, the design of Dreadnoughts ( went on board USS Texas ), the development of Rosyth, defence at both Rosyth & Scapa, the battle of Dogger, The Battle of Jutland, & quite a bit about the personalities of Beatty & Jellicoe. I thought the programme dragged a little in the middle but overall it was well worth a watch. Good luck,
Steve

I have just watched it on Sky catch up - and set it to record next week's episode. I found it worth watching, and noted that they were kinder to Beattie's reputation than most historians.

Ray, can you not get it on iPlayer, if you use settings to give a Scottish post code eg G3 8EU ?

Just watched the 2nd episode. Thought it better than the first. Starts with early methods for defeating U boats ( hammer to smash the periscope!). The early battle under 'Prize Rules'. Development of hydrophones ( using opera singers). Unrestricted warfare. Lusitania. The US mine field across the North Sea & the scuttling of the German Grand Fleet & the subsequent shooting of some crew. Well worth a watch on iPlayer.
