If I was Prime Minister...

Unread post by Silver_Shiney »

On the General Election thread, Stephen said he'd vote for me

Seriously, what policies would you implement if you were running the country?

For me, in no particular order of priority, I would include:

Scrap, or very heavily tax the obscenely high salaries paid to footballers and entertainers. I would also insist that teams comprised players from that town/city. I also think it ridiculous that there are foreign players in our national team.

Impounded cars would not be scrapped (my SIL's friend recently had his 18-month old, £28,000 car crushed because he'd let the road tax expire!). I would put them in a workshop and use them to train the out-of-work to become mechanics. Those cars that were roadworthy would be sold, those that aren't would be stripped for spares and the left-overs recycled. Money raised would go back to the Treasury (after paying trainers' salaries etc - the trainees would be receiving their unemployment benefit but would be actually doing something useful to get it).

Similarly, the work-shy would be required to do some form of work in order to eat. This should at least reduce the time they have for procreating and bringing extra mouths for the taxpayer to feed.

NHS "managers" would have their salaries brought down to sensible levels.

MPs who need to stay in London for parliamentary business to be accommodated in the Guards Barracks on Birdcage Walk, providing a safe and secure place to stay and reducing expenses. Second-class transport to be used instead of first-class.

Strict border controls to be put in place. Any foreign driver who has committed a traffic offence will be prevented from leaving until the necessary fines have been paid. Pensioners going to warmer climes for the winter to have their winter fuel allowance stopped for the period they are away. People coming in to show proof that they can afford to pay for any medical treatment (tragic accidents excepted).

Routine overseas aid payments to be stopped until we've got this country back on its feet and then better equipped to help others.

The Armed Forces to be rebuilt so that we are capable of defending ourselves. Although Labour is traditionally the enemy of the military, the Conservative Government in the late 80s/early 90s did huge damage with Mrs T's 2.5% Efficiency exercise.

Prisons to be returned to places of punishment, as opposed to the hotels they currently are. Punishments to fit the crime. Murderers to enjoy the same rights to food, clothing, company etc as their victims currently have.

Right, having probably alienated most of you, let's have your ambitions!

That's another thing - you want to live here, you learn to speak English. There would be none of these multi-lingual schools.

got to disagree (in part) here.
We can't be 'I'm alright Jack' -ish and ignore the plight of others wherever they may be...

BUT and it's a BIG But
I'd make sure that foreign aid was used properly - not for propping up lavish lifestyles, arms buying etc etc

I would put pressure on the rest of the E.U. to form a naval border patrol nearer the waters of the countries where people trafficking and illegal immigration to Europe is rife.
Do I feel sorry for the 800 people that drowned trying to get to Europe for an easy life ? NO!! you might think I'm a hard faced git with no compassion but your wrong.
We have three graves in the cemetery in Nottingham where two great uncles and a grandad gave their lives in two world wars so that you and I can live in freedom in a democratic and peaceful country. If either of those two wars had been lost there would be nobody to come to our aid and millions would have perished.
We take asylum seekers in and give them a life like they have never experienced before and let them live like they are still living in their homeland and some pay us back by terrorist acts.
No I do not feel sorry for anybody who is not prepared to work hard and fight for a country that they were born in.
Like Shiney I would make everyone work for the benefits that they receive unless it was physically impossible to do so and I mean physically impossible, we had a girl work in our office who had no legs and she did a 37 hour week.

If l were prime Minister gawd help all of you......

I would close all religious schools.

I would faze out child benefit for families on avarage incomes and above.

I would make it compulsory that every new build has solar pannels

I would stop plans for trident and spend the money on our conventional forces.

I would introduce a nationalised pharmaceutical industry.

I would stop austerity cuts in favour of a one off austerity tax.

I would have something simialar to the poll tax.

I would introduce charges for use of NHS translators.

I would make Ian Duncan Smith stand trial for his crimes against the disabled.

I would reintroduce grammar schools. ....all children need good teachers but our brightest kids need to be challenged.

I could go on....

Tis the Politics of envy, and sorry but I simply could not vote in ' SS ' as PM. This week he's picking on the footy players plus entertainers and next week it'll be somebody else who earns more than he does.

My view is that they should be able to earn whatever they can in the short time available to them ... but whilst ensuring that they pay the full 40% tax liability on all of their earnings above their IR PAYE code.

Perhaps a desk job in the Foreign Office would suffice.

:wtf:

Hi Goutyman

l think the money would be better off spent on finding out which children suffer from dyslexia.....a problem that is often the result of poor grammar.

No envy at all, Moby - I'm on a "below average" wage but still paid off my mortgage early so am extremely happy with my income level. There are many professions that command a much, much higher salary and it's well deserved. Footballers and the likes of Russell Brand do NOT come into that category.

I would also re-introduce polytechnics - there's been far too much emphasis on getting a degree. Not every child is academic (I certainly wasn't) and there seems to be very little in the way of vocational training - we still need hairdressers etc.

To add to the pot......

1. Bring back National Service

2. All medical staff who abuse, neglect and cock up medical procedures should be held to account in the courts.

3. Bring back capital punishment.

4. All cyclists on pedestrian pavements shot on site. The same goes for car owners.

5. Using a mobile phone while driving, 6 months in prison, minimum, and band for five years from driving.

6. Jeremy Clarkson reinstated to Top Gear

As long as the amount isn't too high as to cause offence to your level of acceptance, I would assume.

Now you are being God like, religious similarity not intended.

It is pure left wing dogma else you are in favour of restricting the earnings of those whom you do not approve of ... as a pending Prime Minister that is not acceptable to me as surely everybody should be treated equally rather than some being treated more equal than others ?

ps ... I also voted ' No '

I want National Insurance to work like all other forms of insurance, and not just for migrants, but for everyone. Until you've paid the premiums you can't claim. And there'd be a no claims discount too!

Come on, Moby, surely you can't agree it's right that the like of Brand get paid huge sums of money for being offensive?

I couldn't give a monkey's what a person's salary is provided it is commensurate with professional skill levels. For example, a brain surgeon can demand whatever salary he likes (I'd expect him to pay the full amount of tax of course) but £200,000 A WEEK for kicking a ball around a field - gimme a break. That's out of all proportion. I'd be surprised if the brain surgeon got anything like that per annum (highly delighted if he did!).

I think a top brain surgeon could certainly get that per annum, especially with a bit of private practice thrown in. But I agree with your basic point that £200,000 a week for kicking a football around is obscene, even if some of them are quite good at it.

And as for Brand, well he doesn't get highly paid for being offensive, he gets it in spite of being offensive. But again I agree, I wouldn't pay him minimum wage.
