Bet not many of this forums members woke up to a UKIP MP as we did this morning, not that he got my vote.

Mind you his majority was reduced from just over 12,000 when he defected from the tory party and won a bye election last year, to just over 3,000.

Nationally I am over the moon and it's not often you see 3 party leaders resign in one day, or an incumberant government increase the number of seats it holds at an election.

I think the garrulous SNP declarations of running the economy with Labour, of ruling England etc did the Tories a big favour. English people as a whole are not given to those kinds of statements about themselves or others and I am sure myself that tactical voting to stop both Ed Milliband and the SNP was a factor. We can now sit back and watch the knives of the Tory far rght being sharpened to go for David Cameron and the one nation Tories, as they did in John Major's Tory government. They are living in cloud cuckoo land because there is a solid centreist quiet majority, and the right wing Labour people and the Left wing Tories represent that centreist viewpoint.

Spot on Frank. I couldn't lose on this election: voted Socialist as my conscience dictated, but with the Tories winning I will be protected as one of the endangered species ( pensioner) by Tory policies. As for our Scottish friends, if the Tories decided to stuff them, i.e reviewing the Barnet formula and bringing their constituencies in line with the UK, they will then know what fools gold looks like.

It seems to me that Milliband took his party too far to the left which brought him then into competition with the far left socialist parties. This enabled the Tories to take a right wing stand, coupled with occupying the centre ground. It also meant that in the event of a hung parliament he would have had to rely on the Scottish vote to have any chance of governing. I wonder what his brother will be thinking today? With David at the helm I think the situation would have been very different.

I'm in no doubt David Miliband will be chuffed to bits that his backstabbing brother got his just deserts. As you say it would have been a whole different story had David been elected leader.

I see he is 25/1 to be the new leader of the labour party....well perhaps not this time around but 5 years is a long time in politics ....

All the "front runners" at the moment would fall into the majority of those categories.
