There's a Monster in my house

Unread post by emjay45 »

A few weeks ago I came out of the kitchen to find a HUGE spider in the hall. My husband was outside in the garden but heard my scream. Now my mother always refused to kill a spider believing in the old adage “If you want to live and thrive let the spider run alive”. So with a piece of paper and a glass the spider was removed. My husband promised he put it in the field behind the house assuring me it wouldn’t find it’s way back. Today in almost the same spot there was what appeared to be a huge dead spider. Now I know spiders shed their skins when they are growing larger. So the question is has my monster come back and is increasing in size (Arrgh!!!), have I another monster lurking in the shadows or is it as my husband is trying to convince me simply a dead spider? I don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep tonight.

My cure (and it works) for spiders - one big slipper, thwack and it's gone. Vacuum up the remains and off you go. However, do keep an eye out for it's family. Same applies to snakes - always watch out for the family searching later on.

Don't take any notice of these two, emjay. They are being rotten to you. I know how you feel - I have an over active imagination where creepy crawlies are concerned as well.

Thank you Maureen for understanding. It's not funny.

and Thank you Stephen now I definitely won't be sleeping tonight. My OH said thanks too, he remembers the last time I was convinced there was a spider in the bed. After I bashed him on the head (I thought there was a spider on his head, honest) I insisted on stripping the whole bed off and checking everywhere. We didn't get much sleep that night.

I understand COMPLETELY as I am the same with spiders - and mice etc Once many, many years ago, I woke to find a dead spider under me in bed - OMG that was awful and I can still remember that physical feeling of revulsion and terror when I saw it. We have also been up in the night stripping the bed and moving furniture to catch the wretched thing I have seen scuttle under the bed or somewhere dark.

I hope you manage to catch your monster and are able to sleep.

SWMBO can spot a spider at 100 yards and will not settle until it is rendered lifeless. Can you believe anybody could fit on the rear shelf of a Mini (the old one) because they spotted a spider?!!!! That takes some doing from a sitting position!!

I spent an evening once with my feet up on the sofa unable to move for hours until my husband came home because there was a spider in the room. My children were in bed at the time and I was praying one of them wouldn't wake up. Both have grown up without my fear of spiders I'm glad to say. I just know this one is waiting for me to be on my own in the house to make an appearance.

Emjay, I remember doing a similar thing many years ago, a huge spider ran under a chair and I spent a couple of hours not taking my eyes off the chair and waiting for my husband to come home to dispose of it, needless to say when he did get home it was nowhere to be seen :lolno:

I can quite understand how you feel as I am terrified of them too ..

Two houses ago I was in on my own one evening in winter, when I saw a mouse run across the room and go behind the gas fire. I was torn between watching the fire in case it came out, or getting to the phone to call Tony to come home STRAIGHT AWAY! I went all around the room to the landline - before mobiles - by climbing over the furniture and then finally leaping to the telephone table just outside in the hallway. I didn't sleep that night AT ALL. The wretched thing avoided all traps but we eventually got it with poison.

Really I need to live in a high level penthouse apartment. Lol

Where do they go? After a lengthy search, my husband is usually convinced I've been seeing things. Although he knows I didn't imagine the one he removed to the field.

With a field behind us one of my worries when we go away is that field mice will get in the house. Last year I could hear a lot of noises in the garage and my husband assured me there were no mice in there. One day I opened the door from the house which leads into the garage and a little mouse popped up. Yes another loud scream and traps were put down. We put chocolate in the traps and more than one mouse was caught.( I felt a little cruel) but I'd have to move house if they got into the house. :( There were plenty of 'I told you so' and 'Why do you always think it's my imagination'.

I wonder where these phobias stem from? Because they are phobias. The trouble is I HAVE passed them on to at least one of my daughters - and so it continues.

Our mice like Marathon bars best

There is often a little overflow pipe sticking out of the wall, near to the ground and ' it ' will be an appreciated route into your house on a cold damp autumnal morning. Get a cheapo bird feeder from the £shop and cut off some wire mesh to block up his / her / their entry.

Spiders ... let it said are your friends cos they eat all the mites and so forth that live in your carpets.

ps ... Stephen will probably do a blow up pic of a ' mite ' if you ask nicely.

It does nothing for your nerves when you are quietly relaxing in front of the television and suddenly your OH leaps up and starts shrieking only to find a little spider creeping along the edge of the room minding its own business.
Oddly enough she doesn't mind mice...........but spiders. Heck no!!

I tried to post this earlier but it seems to have disappeared.

Emjay, try putting a conker in each corner of the room. We used to get beasties roaming around the room but since we did it, we only see a couple every year. Those must be well hard, so I coax them outside.

They've got to be fresh conkers, apparently the smell, or whatever, dissipates quite quickly so you have to replace the conkers frequently.

I think my biggest problem is just my over active imagination. When I was about 10 or 11 years old, I was laying in bed and something thumped down on to the pillow right next to my ear. I didn't have a bedside light so had to get out of bed to use the main switch and there on the pillow was the biggest, fattest moth type thing that was right next to where my ear would have been. I screamed for my dad who dealt with it but for many nights afterwards all I could think about was that it might have climbed into my ear.

Also, if I do kill a spider and chuck it down the toilet, the next time I use the loo all I can think about is whether the spider didn't die and is trying to get back up the toilet bowl.

My other problem is NITS. We went down a slate mine in North Wales recently and you had to put on a hard hat. Loads of schoolchildren got off the slate train and their hats were distributed to the queue. I just remember thinking that I hoped none of the school kids had nits. That was it - my head started itching straight away and every time it itched afterwards all I could think was OMG, I've got nits. I'm pleased to say I haven't but I obviously need help with my imagination  When we went down the Electric Mountain at Dinorwig we were issued with hairnets to wear under the hard hats. Some of you ladies do have very active imaginations. Sue's is up there with the wildest, and it can sometimes try the patience of a Saint (Not that I am a Saint by any means). I drop the spiders outside when I catch them, and I try to avoid leaving anything around for rats and mice since we saw a rat in the garden eating brazenly from a bird food coconut. I never kill a creature if I can help it. I worked with a chap who used to say "Dont kill it unless you can make another one!"

It is true though that spiders are good for killing other more obnoxious pests like mites. It gets out of hand though when there are so many that you can hear them chewing above the sound of the TV!
