Re: There's a Monster in my house
Spiders chew them very noisily, smacking their lips with pleasure over the blood!

Sounds like the camel spiders we had in the desert - they at least injected you with an anesthetic first so you wouldn't feel it. The rule was, if you had reason to think there was one in the room, you didn't go to bed until it had been found and killed.

Good rule - you wouldn't want to go to bed with a camel after all !!
Well, maybe after a few months in the desert......?!

Re: There's a Monster in my house
The Officers' Mess had a couple of DelBoy's dolls for that, I am reliably informed...
One guy on the mainland got wrecked one night and collapsed in a stupor on his way back to his room. A camel spider chewed half his face away, he had to be "casevacced" home...

I think there's a lot of over reaction here. Spiders are entirely harmless.
Well mostly.
Well some of them.
Except the ones that bite you and kill you obviously.
But there are none of those in the UK.
Well only a few.
Well more than there used to be. Especially if you buy bananas.

I've never heard that one but my son says that you can buy cedar balls which are supposed to repel spiders. I'll try anything. My husband has also sent off for some sort of plug in device which we are going to try.Keechy wrote:I tried to post this earlier but it seems to have disappeared.
Emjay, try putting a conker in each corner of the room. We used to get beasties roaming around the room but since we did it, we only see a couple every year. Those must be well hard, so I coax them outside.
I may tell my spider banana story one day.Mervyn and Trish wrote:I think there's a lot of over reaction here. Spiders are entirely harmless.

It may be able to run 10mph, bet I could run the 50 second mile if one of these camel spiders pitched up.

I would rather give house room to a spider than a fly.
I always remove a spider from the house, card and glass approach method, with some trepidation that they will no longer be there to catch any fly that dares to enter our home.

Same here. There's nothing worse than a fly or mozzy buzzing around, especially just as you get into bed and you suddenly hear the damn thing.

Re: There's a Monster in my house
We have the occasional visit from a giant spider, they usually roam around the room just below ceiling level, and we tend to leave them alone on the assumption they will keep the flies down.
However we don't have (or allow) spiders webs in the house, so the question is how would they go about catching flies without a web? I doubt they just pounce on any unsuspecting fly, so do they actually help to rid us of flies, or are we deluding ourselves?

No, really - don't put up with it! If there's a 'something' near you and you don't like it (in the case of an insect etc) - get rid. Find the courage, find the means of dispatch and use it. Put kettle on, relax.

Em I'm not going anywhere near the 'something' I saw in my hall and if it comes back I just hope help is at hand.Boris+ wrote:No, really - don't put up with it! Re: There's a Monster in my house
Hi Em.
I had to dispatch hundreds of little monsters this afternoon....a nest of wasps had only taken up residence in one of my bird nesting boxes, it wouldn't have been such a problem had they used a nest box further down the garden but outside our patio doors... they had to go. Tried squirting in some wd-40 which didn't seem to work then I came across some old wasp/fly killer which after a few good squirts soon had the little buggers running for cover.
When the coast was clear I removed the nest from the box which I have to say I found quite fascinating, the wasp grubs were wriggling around in their individual cells all on different levels throughout the cone.
As for big monster in your house I wouldn't worry to much as its the small ones you should be worrying about as some of them bite
Sleep well my friend
Regards
Keefy

Ooh don't, I try not to think about those. There was a programme on recently about the bugs and insects in our houses. I didn't watch it. If I had I'd NEVER sleep again.Onelife wrote:Hi Em.

Hi Em
It's not a nice thought to think we are sharing our beds with thousands of tiny bed bugs (mostly on my wife's side I may add)
Funny thing is, now I have started mentioning bugs my head has started itching
