Methinks this well intention legislation needs a serious rethink

Unlike gfwgfw's experience, my dear mum is in Kings College hospital at the moment and nearly all the staff on the Liver Ward are from the Uk.
I've only met one so far (in six weeks) who is from eastern Europe.

Most are young black Londoners.

I don't know how much they earn but it's not enough. They are brilliant.

What is the situation when the nurses spouse is earning more than the magic £35,000? I have worked for the NHS for almost 40 years now, and can think of a few that would probably come into that category.


What's so wrong with a points system similar to that operated by Australia (and probably other countries)?

A few coming into that £35000 category doesn't mean the majority. I think it's ludicrous to deport genuine hard working professional nurses just because through no fault of their own they are not earning enough. Without them the NHS is/will struggle even more than it currently does to provide the level of care society now demands.

I fully agree about introducing a points system, but for new applicants, not workers as I mention above who are already here and contributing to society and paying their way.

Everyone, you do realise this was an article in the Daily Wail, about a prediction from a trade union body, of their interpretation of a domesday scenario effect, if a proposed new legislation is implemented.
I cannot believe any Govt. would enact a law that led to the mass decimation of NHS staff, unless they had a well trained batch of UK nurses waiting to take over.
So calm down and keep taking the tablets.

Agree Stephen.......and lets face it the reason the migrant NHS jobs became available in the first place was due to the shortfall in home sourced doctors and nurses.....this being the result of cut backs in nurse training opportunities.

No one is getting excited or taking tablets towny44, just discussing in a rational manner what has been reported on the news.

Yes, my link was for the Mail, but I also watched this news/proposal on BBC Breakfast the other morning when they interviewed the head of the RCN, who I expect knows a bit more than us. As you can imagine he was not best pleased with the proposals.

Personally I can't see it happening either. But do the people who this might affect need this sort of scare mongering, no.
