Windows 10

Unread post by gfwgfw »

Good Evening

I am sure that many of you CC'ers like me have been offered a free update to the promised late July introduction of Windows 10

It seems I have to register my interest to have the Windows 10

Not too sure what to do

Comments please

Just because you register does not mean that you have to do anything - it just keeps your options open.

Good morning Graham.

Look at the bottom of your puter screen, right hand side. You should see a white box with a cross in it. Click on it, read the information and follow the instructions if you want to reserve your free copy of Windows 10.

Hope that helps

Just to add.

When you open the box, take the money. No, not that ;)

When you open the Windows 10 upgrade box (white box with cross) you will see a drop down menu tag (top left) as pointed out in the diagrams below (arrows). Click on it and then click on 'Upgrade for free' and follow the instructions.

Basically, all they want is your email address for downloading the software when it becomes available. You can also check other things, like, 'Check Your PC' to see if it has the requirements for Windows 10.

Many thanks for the info

Usually a new Windows app are full of gremlins - Windows 8 a good example

Not sure whether to take the offer now, or wait a while rather than be a Windows guinea pig

I registered my interest and thought that was it until I saw the threads on here. I don't have the app in my systems tray.

Microsoft say to try a number of things if the app isn't visible.

First, ensure that automatic update is enabled.

Look at the history of updates to see if KB3035583 has been installed successfully.

Go into Windows\System32\GWX and run gwx.exe

If it's still not playing, open Notepad and copy

reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Appraiser" /v UtcOnetimeSend /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
schtasks /run /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser"
:CompatCheckRunning
schtasks /query /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Application Experience\Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser" | findstr Ready >nul
if NOT "%errorlevel%" == "0" ping localhost >nul &goto :CompatCheckRunning
schtasks /run /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Setup\gwx\refreshgwxconfig"

into it. Save the file as Windows10Upgrade.cmd in that directory, then run it as Administrator. Apparently it can take several minutes, and I had to leave for work before it finished on my laptop this morning so can't report any further on how successful it was!

Oh - and you must be running certain versions of Win7 - Home Premium is probably what we all have and this is one of the "approved" versions - and SP1 must be installed.

See http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-ti ... ws-10-app/ for further info.

One thing I can't seem to find out is software compatability. I'm fed up with later versions of Windows not running software written under earlier platforms and have had to give up the excellent game Pharaoh/Cleopatra when I moved from XP to 7. Having made quite an investment into Windows-based software, I'd be somewhat annoyed if it turns out that I can't run it under Win 10.

Thanks, Stephen, but I'm not convinced that includes games that old - Redmond's finest are probably assuming that we've all ditched the old stuff.

Anyway, if Welshie no longer has the disks, it'll be academic.

I hate Windows. I'm sure I must have mentioned this before.

It's certainly bloatware. Windows 10 may well be my last version before moving to Ubuntu or even (washes mouth out with soap and water) an Apple...

Well, the GWX thing didn't work at all, so I am no wiser.

However I have found Pharaoh Gold and got it to run. I might pass on Windows 10 and change to a more professional OS in time.

Well, the Get Windows 10 icon has now appeared after an overnight software update! It must depend on where your IP address is on the pecking order...

Had an email through this morning and apparently the new version of Windows will be free.................... for the first 12 months and then you pay!! Since I'm happy enough with Windows 7 I think I will decline the download.
I haven't read the email in full butif you eventually have to pay, it's not free is it?

Wrong. It is completely free. You have a limited time to claim it, up to one year.
