Tattoos

Unread post by Ray Scully »

It appears that tattoos are becoming increasingly popular, with nearly a quarter of the under forties 'sporting' one or more.I am from a generation who to put it mildly find them challenging and can not understand why someone would make such a permanent statement on their body which in time could become totally inappropriate. Any thoughts out there?

Our eldest daughter has about 13-14 of them and I hate each and every one. At her rebellious stage, she also had about a dozen piercings - though most of those have gone now. She is getting married two weeks tomorrow and seeing her in her wedding dress with all the ink showing breaks my heart - but she liked them at the time, though she regrets SOME of them now.

We have bought tattoo cover up make up, but her fiance says her tattoos define her and wants her to leave them on show. It's their day so I can't interfere, but I do wish they weren't there.

So my thoughts, I HATE them!

Agree, totally horrible things and no doubt as time passes those who regret having them will no doubt want them removed by the NHS.

Hate them too. And don't understand them. We've all bought clothes, for example, that were fashionable at the time but we wouldn't be seen dead in now. Tattoos can go out of fashion too but you can't just send them to the charity shop.

I was never tempted as I always thought one day I will be an old lady ( no comments from the usual 'think they are funny brigade' thank you  ) and then what would they look like with 'wrinkly' skin, it was always enough of a reason to deter me.

I wouldn't say I particularly dislike them .. each to their own as they say but I do think choices made when you are a teenager wouldn't necessarily be the same choices you would make 30 years later and a tattoo is for life.

Absolutely ghastly things. The legal age of 18 should be (at least) doubled!

Having said that, I see lots of ladies my sort of age (60-ish) with little butterflies etc, that are obviously recently done. Daft lot!

Bloody stupid idea. It's like having wallpaper that you can't change for the rest of your life.

Perhaps a discreet ' tasteful ' butterfly would suffice for the ladies but some seem to be more inclined to opt for the handlebars across their buttocks approach ... far too chavy for my tastes.

ps .. guess they're aok on sailors and the like, eh Frank ? ;)

My wife and I do not have any, but our two children do, our daughters ones are small and discreet and mostly hidden except for a small one on her foot, our son has his name in Chinese down the side of one of his legs, personally I do not take any notice of them.

Yesterday we had an engineer from British Gas visit our home and he had large heavy black scroll type tattoos up both arms, he was wearing a short sleeve shirt.

Tattoos are not something new, years ago it seemed the done thing for people who were in the armed forces especially the navy, to have them and they still seem proud to display them irrespective of age.

I cannot say they offend me neither do I find them challenging, each to their own, the thing however I do find challenging is multiple face piercings, but again each to their own.

I once taught a lovely student at Uni, and she as really beautifully mannered, clever, personable. I used to think "This girl will go far in life". One day she bent into her bag to get her lap top out and revealed an enormous tatoo right across the small of her back. I said nothing but I have to be honest, my perception was changed in an instant.

I don't have problem with tattoos on men but seeing ladies with tattoos on arms and legs for me is a right turn off. For some irrational reason I don't like them at all. Cheryl Cole, as was, has one around her leg (not that I was looking - I just happened to notice  ) and I think it just looks awful. Neither do I like lip and eyebrow piercings. I could happily cringe (if that's possible) whenever I see them.
I have been checking the tennis ladies legs and they don't seem to have any tattoos.
