HMS Illustrious

Unread post by Romig1 »

Just been reading of the potential for the city of Hull to purchase "Lusty" when she is decommissioned next year, and to transform her into a tourist attraction.

http://www.thisishullandeastriding.co.u ... z2KWSsYd6h

Sounds a fantastic idea - subject to suitable funding being secured and must be better than the fate which befell her sisters (being sold to the Turks for scrap). It's something which would certainly bring me to the city, and I'm sure others would too.

Should just be time for AOTH to get his daughter married-off and her room transformed into lodgings for the influx of tourists?

It would be nice if it happened as it would look pretty good on the waterfront near to the marina and the Deep. However, it is only an idea put forward by an academic at Hull University and the proposal has nothing to do with the local council.

Rob, I was reading the story in the Yorkshire Post. It gave the impression that in addition to the academics, there was support from tourism bosses, business leaders and councillors - who are to prepare for a possible bid. I thought the quote from the council chief was positive (without being in any way committal).

Is it just another case of a good story, without much substance?
If so, then it's a shame, as similar ships throughout the world have proved very popular. Indeed we are visiting the US later this year and on a free day in San-Diego have already pencilled in a visit to USS Midway.

Debbie, I'd seen that Lusty was visiting the 'Pool soon. I see that it will be possible to go on a ship's visit...a darned sight more interesting than a look around Ventura I would suggest! :D

Unfortunately we are away for the weekend, or I may have been sorely tempted.

The funny thing about the Hull bid is that they are wondering exactly where such a huge ship would be placed. If they think she's big they should see her replacement, or even bigger the current US carriers which dwarf even our new one(s).

Hi Romig,

The story got a lot of publicity during the week in the local media.

Hull City Council are seriously looking at a number of options to bring tourists into Hull and a major revamp of the waterfront area is the prime contender, so bringing in a major centrepiece like HMS Illustrious isn't a daft idea. They have been building aircraft in the East Riding since the first world war and one of the suggestions was that the Illustrious could be made into a floating aircraft museum . Of big interest to me is the proposal to build a cruise terminal in Hull....so watch this space.

One things for certain....it won't be going to Derby.

Rob

It would be good news if Illustrious did come, and even better news if Hull was developed as a cruise port especially for Scandinavian and Baltic cruises.

How about Illustrious is converted and sails on cruise itineraries out of Hull periodically?
