Yes, the official FB page is well looked after - admin are keeping a close rein on it and answering qus quite promptly - well, as promptly as office hours will allow!


But we'll keep on reminding them that this site is temporary...

I wasn't referring to P&O's official page although it runs along, but there is no real chat on there, sometimes there is but it's a lot of posts asking questions that were best asked before booking or people making statements like "Going on azura!!!" P&O do answer SOME questions, as for admin there appears to be little or none. The unofficial one is just a place where those who are not welcome elsewhere go or those who know no better & think it's official.

Oh no, I didn't realise! I go on there sometimes to post but mostly to read and I didn't realise we were a bunch of pariahs
Doest this mean that there is a secret, cliquey group where only the really 'special' people get to go. That must be a bit offputting for newcomers - just an observation.

We have been asked to join another group on Facebook but we choose not to, it isn't that we are not welcome elsewhere or know no better!!

Not at all, there was a group formed to avoid the trolls & those who by past history just look to disrupt, newcomers are welcome & recieved with open arms. It's those who the group was formed to avoid who are not welcome, as they well know because they keep trying to join. Sad really, how many times do people have to be rejected? Most stopped posting on the unmoderated group months ago, it used to be really good there but as soon as the usual suspects realised they could say what they liked it was doomed. I do prefer the web based format though, more structured. I hope admin are aware what happened in the past & this group avoids such things

No please don't start another topic, it will only end up full of unsubstantiated posts. We want to go forwards not backwards which some seem intent on taking the forum.

FB can be full of "factions", groups started to be set against others for instance. As far as the cruising side of thing goes P&O run an Official PAGE which is like a portal to P&O, they make announcements & answer questions, it works OK. Others over time have set up GROUPS, as anyone can, where like minded people can chat about a common subject, I like to think it's like a dinner table where chat evolves based on a common original purpose. The one I use is a very friendly group run to help others & chat amongst ourselves, moderation is seldom needed.
There are some very peculiar people about out there though.

I belong to just one closed FB group - one set up by a member of the family so we can discuss family matters, share private piccies etc.

I have no intention of joining a private cruise group on FB

Given the thread topic is 'Facebook groups' I think reference to Facebook groups is perfectly legitimate. It is a matter of public record why a particular Facebook group was set up away from the unofficial P&O group which particular individuals were not allowed to join; this can certainly can be substantiated by any number of people. The reason for a closed group is to stop particular individuals from joining. I personally consider this forum to be a new start but it is difficult not to refer to some aspects of the past when there is a genuine reason for mentioning. From my point of view I prefer a forum layout to Facebook, which is a series of comments without any structure. On a personal level, I am not one of those people who post just to tell people I've made a cake.

This group is in effect a closed group, you can't access it unless you join

I have heard tell of a FB closed group set up by a number of people to keep out nasty trolls - eventually all of the co admininstrators bar one couldn't stand it and left to join a competitor's group!!!!!!

Not entirely accurate, there was one person who continually posted what appeared to be made up stuff or quotes from "google", posted under an assumed name against FB rules & made outrageous allegations, so left in a tantrum before he was removed. The group he "left" has gone from strength to strength & now has 70 + members more than when the person was there. The new group was formed to mock & ruin the old one, but like most negative things it has not prospered I am told.

At risk of repeating myself ..this forum is in effect a closed group, you need to be a member to participate.
Polls were run to ask members which level of security they wanted on the Fb group I am involved in, the options were "OPEN" (everyone can see) ''CLOSED'' only members, or "SECRET" nobody even knows about it except members (like the ones on the old P&O CC ) people wanted the "closed version" nothing sinister & no different to most groups & forums.

Sorry Meg I assumed you referred to a cruise group as that was broadly the subject of the thread.
No guilt though, just an explaination of the situation as I saw it & it still applies.

But this forum is open for anyone to view the posts, without joining. Only information such as members etc is hidden to non-members.

The FB closed groups are inaccessible to me as a non-member.

...oh, and there weren't any secret groups on the last P&O CC. There were closed groups, but these were visible to non-members and such people could apply to join.
