I sometimes think fear of the dentist is worse than the reality these days, with too many memories of the old fashioned equipment and less effective anaesthetics of our youth (I refer now to our 55 plus members).

In the last three years I've had a crown, a root canal treatment and an implant (yes, I know, I'm falling to bits) and all were a lot less horrible than I feared. In fact I was so dosed up on happy juice, I'd describe all three as uncomfortable rather than painful - less painful in fact than a quick scale and polish with no meds.

You have my sympathy, however, Stephen. A week without alcohol sounds traumatic to me.

I've had my scan and now waiting for the quote main thing is he can carry out the procedure so tooth can be replaced

That's exactly how I feel - I have been warned I won't get any change out of £2000 oh well I can't see me cruising now until Christmas but don't hold me to that anyone

Give or take a pound that's what mine cost. Seems par for the course for a proper job.

I know some people go abroad to save a bit but I can't see how that can work properly. I had one appointment to remove the duff tooth; when all had healed up I had one to place the implant itself; that was left for six months to thoroughly bed in with two or three check up appointments along the way; then the crown bit was fitted; then there were two or three follow up checks. Can't see how that can be done in a single trip to eastern Europe.

Plus my dentist has had a number of horror follow ups with patients coming to see him with dodgy cheap jobs resulting in anything from a wobbly tooth to serious infections. The worst was a false tooth fitted with a self tapping screw you could have bought in B&Q. So on balance the £2k was worth it for peace of mind.

Just come back from second dentist visit, this time my own one. All was well until late afternoon when the gum started bleeding continuesly. Turns out the problem was where they cut the gum and peel it back to gain access to the tooth. OK now, fingers crossed.

Just thought I'd let you know that bit of useless information

Just a little tip for you

If you've got a nice expensive pillow you would be well advised to cover it with a soft towel or something similar as when you dribble tonight it won't half make a mess of an unprotected pillow.

There is a simples alternative to all this Stephen.

Contract some tumors in the head and between the Cancer, the Radiotherapy and the Chemo, your teeth will calcify and disintegrate saving you a lot of dental bills. It will also ease the pressure on the overworked tooth fairies!

Not the last time I checked down below

Feeling allot better this morning and taking it easy, although as expected the left side of my face is a bit swollen. Fortunately my extremely good looks haven't been affected. No dramas in the night with any bleeding, although I was being careful not to sleep on that side of my face. Woke in the night with a splitting headache though which has just about gone now.

The wife has deserted me and gone back to work, so I'll have to try and struggle on my own as best I can. You just can't get decent staff these days
