My old Dad used say that 'you are just someone who works there, and when you're gone, you are someone who used to work there'

How very true
I agree Barney, my wife Cheryl worked in Personnel/Human Resources for 40 years, when she started it was the personnel department and she had personal contact with all 400 employees. Years later her job description changed to HR and the personal touch dissapeared from her role.

Personnel: you are a valued person within an organisation.
Human Resource : You are a resource for an organisation.

Barmy!

I'm the only person who knows how my side of the work functions, but I've written a user guide, with many screenshots, so if I did get run over by the proverbial bus, someone could take over straight away.

the trick is, IMHO, not to get too dependent on technology
my work phone is switched on when I get up at 6.00am onwards and switched off at 18.00 and it is switched off at weekends
Anyone who send e mails after 18.00 is trying to impress somebody and anyone who sends them at the weekend is not doing there job properly and needs to learn about time management

exactly - on a smaller scale, I am webmaster of 3 websites and am the only one who knows the intricacies of what is posted and the idiosyncrasies of the various hosts, but there's UTB* files with each organisation with an idiots guide to running them including all the passwords, contacts etc etc

though I have to admit, I don't update them as often as I should, but anyone taking over would manage
