If you've seen my pathetic posts in the Windows 10 section (ie too wimpy to try it) you won't be surprised to hear I'm also finding my new smart phone pretty baffling.

I've booked onto a course at our local Third Age centre so that someone can explain 'Apps' to me. Along with many other features on the device I'm stumped by these mysterious things.

It seems to me that some people's brains are wired differently so that all this new tech is no problem. Is there a brain app I can get so that it will all become magically clear??

Ooooooh! Take cover Stephen! We have met Anne, and she is a very nice lady. I sympathise with her. I haven't got my mobile for anything other than phone texts and camera. I figure I am not that desperate to be looking at Apps, Facebook, Twitter etc., etc., when I am out of the house.

Like all technology most of us only use a fraction of what comes with it. Like yourself I only use my mobile for mainly texting, camera, the odd bit of online viewing, linking to my satnav, oh, and believe it or not, for actually phoning someone!

Unless you are a serious techno geek or a yoof, you will not use 90% of it

Apps are applications, like the weather, music and cruise ship web cams, shopping etc etc
basically they just remove the need to search via google for something and take you straight to the site in question

Stephen don't worry, I am laughing! Frank, thank you for your nice words. I do sort of know what app's are - just get brain freeze when it comes to things like that. I'll let you know how the info session goes.

Well recently I've got myself a new smartphone - and it's ok, getting along with it just fine. I've also then decided to have a tablet for travelling, and then my laptop blew up - so I had to get a new one of those.

BOTHER! All was well until I encountered both Windows 8.1 (grrrr) and Office 2013 all on the same day. I've got a great relationship with the tablet and the phone, but the new laptop has a singularly skittish mouse. Anyone got some cheese Grommit?

Hope you get it sorted soon anned, and that you'll soon be smiling. I was thinking (only thinking, mind you) of upgrading to Windows 10 - but I can't do that until I've got some nice calm quality time.

Simples Boris. When the little prompt comes up on your screen inviting you to your FREE Windows 10, just click, and it happens without you having to lift a finger, well, just a forefinger or whatever finger you use to click.

No need for any calm time to do it.

I hope the relationship twixt you and your phone and tablet is a long and fruitful one

Why can't they just produce a smartphone with the basic Android OS and let the user decide which apps to install? I've got dozens of pre-installed apps that I will never use.

I've got loads of Apps which are naff for me, too - but I just locate them in an area that I don't bother with. I've checked, and they aren't draining much of my battery power etc, so I'm going to concentrate on more packing piles. Is there an App for packing piles?

Well I learned all sorts on the smartphone course today but the nitty gritty of installing and uninstalling apps is next week. One thing the tutor did say was to hold off installing Windows 10 for about 6 months to give it time to show up any problems.
Also did you know the different versions of Android are named after confectionery? Mine is 4.2 which is 'jellybean' and is out of date even though I only got the phone in April. It was superseded by 4.3 (lollipop) but the latest and best version is the 4.4 Kitkat.

Lollipop comes after Kitkat and is 5.0 or higher. Kitkat is much better
