Re: Rugby world cup
On the contrary Kaymar, unlike a lot of the armchair supporters or we hate the rest of Britain brigade I will cheer on any team North of Calais that makes the final stages. Looking at the history of the cup I don't think I will be cheering though, Wales best was third place back in 1987 and Scotland made fourth place in 1991, Ireland have never reached the semis but I do hope one of the teams from Britain prove me wrong and make it to the final but I think the silver polish will be used in Australasia.kaymar wrote:oldbluefox wrote:I wonder who all the England supporters will be cheering on now ...............? Do you think the Welsh would be cheering England on? A few might but in the parts of Wales I have visited you'd stand more chance of getting a Bounty bar out of a coconut!!!
(PS I have never been to South Wales so cannot speak for them).

That's why don't cheer for the other home nations in events, as they wouldn't cheer for England

Re: Rugby world cup
Personally, I am so disillusioned with the "Anyone but England"- hordes among Celts, and Aussies, etc., that nothing would give me more pleasure now than anyone but Ireland Wales Scotland or Australia winning anything. It's a pity, but in the end they make you like it. They can always drag up some pathetic historical reasoning from years ago to justify their vitriol. I heard a Welsh player say something about how he hates those English flags and shirts which are so symbolic of English Colonialism. I just thought 'get a life, the English didn't do it alone!'.

I have no real interest in RU, but can someone tell me how the RFU managed to have England, Wales and Australia in the same group for their home tournament, I think the RFL would have made certain England were in the easiest group......just saying.

There is a clear distinction ... in South Wales they chatter away in their local shops in perfect English, friendly as can be, but as soon as you walk within earshot they change to the Welsh language so that they can talk about you without you knowing what they are sayingoldbluefox wrote:Do you think the Welsh would be cheering England on? Re: Rugby world cup
We were staying near Saundersfoot and were sat on a bench when this Welsh guy came up and sat with us, when I spoke to him he said "oh! your English we hate the #####ng English here especially the blacks" then walked off cursing in Welsh. He was probably from the local tourist office on his lunch break. We have never heard anything like that in our lives but like I said if Wales reach the finals I will be cheering them on.
This is my last word on this subject, in fact probably the last on the forum for a while because we are on the road for a while and soon I will be upsetting the French who hate the English even more.

It happens in North Wales all too often and I find it extremely rude. We had our honeymoon in Wales - BIG mistake!!! It cost 2/6d for the plug if you wanted a bath!!!! Every morning we were offered every cereal imaginable. No matter what we chose we got cornflakes!!! Need I go on? It's a miracle SWMBO and I are still together but after that experience I think we realised things could only get better.
No I will not be cheering for Wales. I'll be gunning for the Irish.
(Having said that we are booked in for St Bride's next year so we'll see what the taffs in South Wales are like. Hopefully they'll all be like our Jan on here..............
)(Not seen her for a while. Is she away on another cruise?)

It was tongue in cheek of course, Blod, but it did actually happen to us in a small shop in Narberth, South Wales.

Re: Rugby world cup
It has happened to us on quite a number of occasions and after having 'lechyd da' and Max Boyce (remember him with that silly bl***y leek?) rammed down my throat for years I have been conditioned. Mrs Krankie and my experience in the Scottish Assembly did nothing to endear me to the Scots either although we have always encountered warmth and friendliness by those we met in Glasgow and Edinburgh. It would be wrong to paint everybody with the same brush.
Dead common Jan? You could have fooled me!!!

I think it depends where you are in North Wales. I had some good times with the locals in both North and South Wales, but I did experience them speaking Welsh when they were talking about me.oldbluefox wrote:It happens in North Wales all too often and I find it extremely rude. I hasten to add that some of my best friends over the years have been Scots, Irish and Welsh, but I still get fed up with anti English rhetoric.

Haverfordwest...the little England beyond Wales. I stayed in The Mariners Hotel Haverfordwest many times when I was visiting the refineries, and Pembroke Power station. In those days run by Mrs Cromwell and her son. Never had a problem there. Lovely bar maid too...I expect she is about 55 now!

Re: Rugby world cup
During my first visit to North Wales (some 44 years ago) we did indeed come across the problem of 'unfriendy locals' even though they were in a minority. My friend and I retaliated by conversing with each other in our schoolboy French, and speaking English in a phoney French accent.
We understood each other perfectly well, though it is debateable whether a monoglot Frenchman would have understood either of us!

We had quite a number of families who moved from the ' Valleys ' to our neck of the woods, they came to either support us Hornets else to seek work. Many of the fathers opted to work in the asbestos factory ( long since closed down ) but sadly some were to pay the ultimate price for their choice. Unlike today's ' immigrants ' these families integrated with us locals with genuine enthusiasm ... especially the daughters if my memory serves me correctly.

Pity it is that Wales did not have the guile to find a way past a well organised Aussie defence tonight. Still, it was a well contested match - and more importantly, they are still in the tournament

I'm really looking forward to all the matches this weekend. Bit worried by the Wales coach saying they will be doing things differently.

I am NOT looking forward to going up to London on the train tomorrow though, it can be rather unpleasant, especially with my very elderly mum, though we will be on the train back before the match ends!

Re: Rugby world cup
Even if the Scots say 'anyone but England', I was still willing them to win against Australia, and on behalf of all my reasonable charming Scots friends I feel desperately sorry that they were denied at the end by a typical bit of injustice.
