Scum of the earth

Unread post by Stephen »

Just watching the evening BBC news and the piece about the poor eighty year old man beaten to a pulp for his life savings. The images of him in hospital were sickening.

I know what I'd like to do to the cowards

Hopefully he will make a recovery, but will no doubt never be the same again.

I am fed up offering this solution to our politicians, because it has never been taken up.

This is my proposal:

Of the West coast of Scotland lies a small Island called "Gruinard Island". It is where they tested the "anthrax" chemical weapons during the war. They say that it has been fully cleaned up but I have my doubts. I say that they should stick all those yobs there with a tent and just periodically drop food to them until they meet their demise.

Any backers?

Ooh! you sound just like my FIL who coincidentally was also Scottish. I do however like your suggestion.

I disagree. Why should we drop food to them?

What really made my blood boil was the police had two suspects that they then released on bail. Un-bl**dy believable.
Haven't they heard of DNA, or do they think it means 'do nothing anyway'!

They must be pretty sure they have the right culprits otherwise they would have just sent them on their way without the need to bail them.

I'm a fan of increased, rather than shorter, prison sentences. The economists say we can't afford to lock people up. The bleeding heart liberals say prison doesn't work.

I say they're both wrong. For the economists, if the penalty for a third shoplifting offence was five years in prison, without Sky TV, mobile phones and videos games, and with no early release, or for an offence like this was 50 years, there would be far fewer scum willing to take the chance and fewer people in prison.

And for the BHL's, it might not cure them but they'd be locked up safely away from the rest of us.

And thanks John. Your offer of a location for the jail sounds ideal.

What gets my goat is when the culprits suddenly get access to a whole raft of solicitors, lawyers, social workers, psychologists and bleeding heart liberals all doing their best at our expense to make life as comfortable as possible for them, citing all manner of excuses on their behalf when all they deserve is the utter contempt of mankind.
Prison should be tough, even harsh for those who commit serious offences as opposed to a life which is invariably as good as if not better than they live on the outside. For too many prison holds no fears.

It's bad enough that they stole his savings, but to actually beat an elderly man to a pulp leaves me wondering what sort of people are in the world today. We've become far too soft and there is no real deterrent any more. As OBF says prisons should be tough places that people don't want to go back to. It's no good saying they should be rehabilitated so they can go back into society. I don't believe some people can ever be rehabilitated.

I think you are right Emjay. For some people casual violence is a way of life and they turn it on, and then enjoy the power it seems to give them, and they can't turn it off. As for the defence lawyers; did anyone see the cartoon in today's Times? It just about sums up the legal profession, it is less about justice than it is about landing them fat fees at the taxpayers expense.

What sort of people .... ?

Those who will shoot a young Mother and her 7 year old son in their legs, that's the sort of people they have in Salford anyway  ... used to be a run down but decent place to live in years gone by.
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

I remember an episode of Rumpole many years ago, when he went into the holding cell or whatever and said "right you little git (or words to that effect), you know you're guilty, I know you're guilty but it's my job to get you acquitted." If defence counsels are able to review the evidence and come to the decision that their client is guilty, why don't they just walk away from it? Of course, the BHLs would say that the criminal is entitled to legal defence, and the fat fees "earned" will ensure that some barrister or other will take the case on.

Punishments are way too soft (if the cases ever get that far)

As one defence lawyer once told me, he knew they were guilty but it was his job to use the law to provide a defence................. and it paid for his children to go to private school.
Whilst I agree that everyone should be entitled to a defence and in most cases some assistance in paying for it, it should not be a limitless pot and the taxpayer should not be paying for countless appeals or countless appearances in court. Why should the taxpayer keep funding a defence lawyer when it's clear you can't behave or have no intention of behaving yourself? What is wrong with paying for your appeal and getting your money back if you are successful?

That does beg the question - is everything that is "legal" really "right" ? Afraid we have the Court of Human Rights and the woolly liberals to blame for much of it

My point exactly, Cubie. I can't remember what the product is/was, but while it was illegal (rightly so) to own or use it, it was legal to stock and sell it. Surely if it's illegal to use it, it can't be right to sell it, yet it is legal to do so.
