Food shortage

Unread post by Kendhni »

Did anybody else see the revivial of the old Food and Drink series on the TV the other night? It had a similar agenda as before but was hosted by Michael Roux (sp?).

One article made an interesting statement that by 2050 there will not be enough space and resource for cattle to feed the worlds population (estimated to be at 9 billion). The suggestion was that we will have to turn to other sources of protein .. the most likely of which will be insects.

Many cultures currently eat insects. On a trip to Mexico we tried crickets which they eat like we would eat crisps ... not a pleasant experience :-)

It sort of puts the whole horsemeat over reaction into perspective.

Indeed so :wtf: ... those in a packet / tin / jar marked ' Worms ' or if there is any mention of ' This product may contain Worms ' will be an absolute No-No

I felt a little bit sick when I first read this thread. What did our ancestors eat? They only caught an animal now and then so what else did they survive on? Too much meat is bad for you anyway.

No doubt the delicious wild Rabbit will prevail

The healthiest meat on the planet earth

Plus bunnies carcass makes the foundation for excellent stock/soups

Have I ever revealed my skill of skinning, gutting a bunny with one hand tied behind my back in well under three minutes

How about that

We probably do eat too much of everything (including meat) ... but out ancestors were known to have eaten anything they could hunt or gather all the ratio for each depends on the era.

Following a cancellation of a lunchtime meeting (due to snow) which was to include lunch, I ventured into town to find some sustenance.

I suspect that the jumbo sausage that I was sold was in fact, made from mealworm!

I blame Ken, it was his idea :o

 ... if we ate all the whales and culled the sea birds and seals, walrusses and penquins etc we could all eat fish instead of worms

ps .. George has been split to the ' Useless facts and George Clooney ' Topic
