Penguins

Unread post by Jan Rosser »

Just been watching the programme I recorded from last night about penguins - spy in the huddle. What funny creatures they are - I laughed out loud so many times at their antics. Anyone else watch it or been lucky enough to actually see them in their own environment and not just in a zoo?

Hilarious weren't they?

Though I felt we shouldn't really be laughing when they fell down!

I'd love to see them in the wild...the nearest we got was to see a couple of isolated penguins on the shore at Milford Sound, in New Zealand.

But Romig it was so funny when they slipped on the ice - the mating didn't go too well either did it!! At one point when the Emperor penguins were all standing about sort of nodding I was reminded of that film Happy Feet - I thought they were going to start dancing! Isn't it strange this fascination we have with them - looking forward to next week's episode.

I saw a couple of bits about it ... one where they came out of the sea and had to climb a cliff ... but they were out of practuce.

The other was to do with the Emperor or King penguins as they slid on their bellies along the ice ... it was the false penguin camera that made me laugh out loud.

Those penguins were really taken in by the mechanised penguins weren't they - the false Crag hopper was being courted by a male and then suddenly his mate arrived and knocked the model over - apparently they mate for life - so jealous - not like those Emperors - they choose a new partner each season.

I see it's repeated on BBC1, Sunday tea-time if anyone missed it.

I must admit I sort of 'winced' everytime that a penguin fell down, and I most cerainly didn't like it when the one penguin became separated from the others going across the ice field, but I was oh so pleased when he caught up and joined in the huddle during the storm.

I think that most of all I enjoyed watching them just leap out of the water and on to the ice/snow.

What a stunning program.

Em :D

I haven't seen this one yet, hence the research into the repeat date, noted above. I do, however, have reservations about this sort of "documentary". Very much like the popular Meerkats series, I am sure the footage is heavily edited to fit around a story to create an entertaining programme. For instance, how do we know that the separated penguin Em mentioned is the same one that eventually caught up and lived happily ever after? One penguin looks much like another to me!

OK, I hear the cries of "cynic"! I shall be recording it on Sunday anyway - even though it overlaps with Time Team !

Unfortunately not. Though we did visit Oamaru, it was mid-day and only had an hour or so there. That's one of the draw-backs of a tour - you don't always get to see everything that you would wish.

A brilliant programme...I don't usually do wild life programmes but I watched that one and it was amazing....Penguin's have always made me smile, they are so funny.

Can't wait for the next episode.

By the way, you lot look like that when you queue up to shake the captain's hand on formal night... :D

You can tell them apart by the colour of the wrapper

I don't think I'll be able to keep a straight face next time I do an evening drinky thing with a Captain - I think I'll be comparing penguins!
