Re: Windows 10
Although I registered the laptop for the "upgrade", I no longer want it but keep getting messages to say it's ready for the off. I did find a site last night telling me how to cancel it, but can't find it now. I have, however, found this, which says the same thing.
It seems, from reading that article, that MS leave some hidden files which force the reinstallation of GWX, whether you want it or not. Someone has found a fix here

Have you tried clicking on the Show Hidden Icons arrow on your task bar (bottom right of screen next to the white 'Action Centre' flag).
Click on 'Customize'
Scroll down until you see the Windows 10 icon. In the drop down menu to the right change it to 'Hide Icon and Notifications'
Done.

Can't you just deselect "upgrade" KB3035583 and not download all the guff in the first place ?

I'll have a look at that Stephen, but that article I cited has many responses from folk saying that W10 is downloading regardless!!

When I reverted back to Windows 7 Merv I too kept getting messages saying Windows 10 was ready for downloading, blah blah blah, so I just carried out the instructions as mentioned and it stopped the nag. Yes, the 10 icon shows in the hidden icons box on the task bar in case if I ever decide to upgrade (unlikely) but that's it.

Re: Windows 10
It wouldn't surprise me ....I noticed my data usage in July and August went through the roof which I am guessing was W10 trying to download on my machine ... but it kept failing (for some reason) until I manually told it to grab it.qbman1 wrote:
So far I have had no problems with Win10 (which is virtually identical to Win7 .. assuming you are not using the tiled interface) and we run some heavy duty software .. the only issues I have seen has been with some older kit.
All the security hype is mostly just media sensationalism ... the same people complaining about microsoft spying probably have their iPhones/Android devices collecting just as much (if not more) data for Apple and Google.

Since last weekend I have been unable to connect to the internet on my laptop which has windows 10 on it The I pad worked ok so I knew it wasn't a router problem.. I did see something flash up on the laptop about a download which had taken place last week. Looking at my talktalk account for September it shows a massive spike on 23rd September which makes me wonder if that was some sort of Windows download. My account does say unlimited broadband download allowance and for September I had used 7.41GB but it seems strange that I couldn't access the internet until today, the 1st October, presumably a new allowance month for downloads. Could be that I had just hit all the right buttons today to reset things plus I left the router off for a couple of hours but I will certainly be showing that blog to my son when he visits at the weekend as it does make me wonder if the download caused the problems and I would rather get rid of Windows 10 if I am going to have that sort of problem every time there is a big download. I think there is probably a limit to the number of times my son will want to keep having to come round to my house and sort out the computer for me.

I switched from 8.1 to 10 as soon as it was released and have not had a single problem or complaint. Granted, I don't ask much of it but for a home P.C., it's just fine, imho

Re: Windows 10
My experience is not quite as good as Kaymar's, but after some initial problems it has settled down and runs fairly well, certainly better than Win 7 did.
However I do have some reservations about the stability of the upgrade software, it does take a long time to format any new updates, and there are occasional problems when updates have been done, but it may be because my laptop its past its best.

Re: Windows 10
I have been quite pleased with Windows 10 which seems quicker and more stable than 7. However I am not sure about Edge. I am persevering since Firefox keeps crashing and doesn't seem at all happy with W10. And I don't like Mail at all with no block delete and no way you can email to groups (unless they have changed it since I last looked). I think I will be sticking with Windows Live Mail.

Edge isn't bad and has some nice new collaborative features ... but I usually stick with Chrome.oldbluefox wrote:I have been quite pleased with Windows 10 which seems quicker and more stable than 7. Re: Windows 10
The problem I have with Edge is in being able to customise it or find functions which are so much more accessible in Firefox. They seem to have prioritised a Reading View, Share options and ability to make a Web Note but there is no Save option (right click I know!) or ability to add toolbars. I am still looking for add-ons and extensions, not that I tend to use them but I am curious.
I suspect anybody who uses Chrome will find the switch easier as Edge and Chrome are very similar. Personally I could never get along with Chrome which is why I went to Firefox.

I would be grateful if someone could say ( briefly), what are the main advantages & perceived drawbacks of Windows 10?
I cannot upgrade until December ( have to use some software up to that date which has not been cleared for use with 10) & am curious.
Thanks,
Steve

It depends on where you are coming from 7 or 8.Ranchi wrote:I would be grateful if someone could say ( briefly), what are the main advantages & perceived drawbacks of Windows 10?

One of the main complaints of 8 was the tiled interface and the lack of a start button both of which have been addressed. Irrespective of whether you prefer the tiled or traditional interfaces both are there and you can easily toggle between the. Overall Win10 is just slicker and fixes many UI issues in previous versions. Some differences
- notifications
- The new Edge browser has some nice new features
- multiple virtual desktops
- improved search facilities
- easier access to management tools (including elevated command prompt)
- quick start up (my computer starts from cold in under 30 seconds)
Probably best bet to get a full list of differences is to google 'windows 10 vs windows 7 differences" (or similar)
I would recommend anybody to upgrade and stick with it for a few days.

Re: Windows 10
A few weeks ago, my colleague made the switch. Last week, his "start" button stopped working and he can't get anywhere. As it's over the 30-day period, he can't revert to the previous version of Windows. Apparently the "start" button issue is known to Microsoft and they don't know what to do about it, and there are 73 pages on the forum about it.
He is now looking for a Windows 7 Home installation disk to reinstall from scratch but, in the meantime, has gone over to the dark side and bought a Mac.

Re: Windows 10
Has he tried using the Search the web and Windows feature, he should be able to find most things this way, and in fact file explorer should be on his task bar for him to find any data he wants, and he can put his regularly used programmes, eg Excel and Word etc on his task bar, other than thhe just needs to find an alternate way to switch off his pc.Silver_Shiney wrote:A few weeks ago, my colleague made the switch. I replaced the Start button with "Start 10" which is more user friendly - admittedly it cost a couple of $$ but it is well worth the cost (and I have it on two machines!)

Fire up task manager (ctrl-shift-esc)
On the processes tab scroll down until you find Windows Explorer
Right-click on it and select restart
I have seen all sorts of other suggestions and solutions using google ... but this one worked for me
After the 30 day mark it is more complicated to get back to your previous version of windows but it is doable. If you don;t have a distribution disk then you can get it from https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/home. You will need your original windows licence number.

I've had a look there but can't see any link pointing to Windows 7. they all seem to point to v10. What am I doing wrong?
