Re: Views on Talk Talk
I had to calm myself down when the talktalk story broke (we are on talktalk) by thinking about all the data out there in all sorts of places especially if you pay bills by Direct Debits because you have to tell the Council Tax office, the gas and electricity providers etc your bank details so that they can take the payments. My date of birth is on the passport office computers and P&Os records so everywhere a computer is used is a risk.
I phoned the credit card company and called into the local bank where our current account is held to advise them that we were talktalk customers and could they look out for unusual payments and I don't do on line banking so hopefully other accounts are safe but who knows nowadays.
The lady on the news this morning who lost £9000 had been totally sucked in by someone claiming to be from talktalk before the news of the scam broke and seems to have given access to her bank account via giving them remote access to her computer (or that was what I understood).
Not sure if I have looked at this too simply but it has taught me a lesson about keep using the same few passwords over and over again for different sites and instead of checking the current account when the monthly statement arrives, I will now be checking a mini statement at least once a week.

That is very good news but the scary part for me was that those in command hadn't got a clue what was protected and what wasn't, according to reports in the Press, for days after the event .... it is also the third breach this year.oldbluefox wrote:Latest news from TalkTalk is that the hack was not as serious as first thought and no bank accounts had been compromised.

I never believe anything I read in the Press. In all honesty I expect there are countless breaches to a greater or lesser extent on businesses which we may never hear about. We just have to trust that whatever security any company has in place is capable enough to thwart the attacks wherever they come from. The fact that a lone individual could hack into the White House's security shows just how fragile computer security can be. It seems to be a case of keeping one step ahead of the hackers who may have a number of motives for their vile trade.Manoverboard wrote:That is very good news but the scary part for me was that those in command hadn't got a clue what was protected and what wasn't, according to reports in the Press, for days after the event .... it is also the third breach this year.oldbluefox wrote:Latest news from TalkTalk is that the hack was not as serious as first thought and no bank accounts had been compromised.
As mere individuals it is important that we take care of our own security as best we can.

This has clearly been a severe incident, but I think the media have been whipping people into a frenzy of paranoia and fear.oldbluefox wrote:I never believe anything I read in the Press. To read some comments on forums it's been like a medieval peasant lynch mob wanting to surround Talk Talk Towers, waiving their pitchforks.
These people need to calm down, work out how it could affect them, and then take the best steps they can to protect themselves.
I think the worse risk is going to be phishing attempts.

Is nothing sacred !!! Now I have something else to get my M & S knickers in a twist about - my details on the M&S website may have been made public. What will the next security breach be.

Re: Views on Talk Talk
That was a common scam a year or so back - my brother-in-law was caught the same way. All seemed very plausible at the time (and he is no fool). At least he didn't lose anything like that much, and after a struggle, Talk Talk admitted some liability and repaid half the lossesKenmo1 wrote:The lady on the news this morning who lost £9000 had been totally sucked in by someone claiming to be from talktalk before the news of the scam broke and seems to have given access to her bank account via giving them remote access to her computer (or that was what I understood).

Re: Views on Talk Talk
I think it's good news - I now have good reason ( or even better reason) to refuse to communicate with Talktalk (I am a customer) when they call me because
a: they can't prove that they are from Talktalk
and b: I can tell them they are too careless with their data security !
result !
Actually the "can't prove they are from Talktalk" applies to any company who calls.
I find it odd, and actually annoying, when companies phone and ask me to prove who I am but can't reciprocate.

Don't worry, Cubie, your secret is safe with me, I didn't post them there. Of course, I can't vouch for what Stephen did with them after I forwarded them to himqbman1 wrote:Bet you've already changed your passwords there chap - don't want those pictures getting out !Silver_Shiney wrote:oldbluefox wrote:M&S the latest!!!
