Does the 'Windows' key on the keypad not bring up the start menu or is this disabled when the start menu icon goes faulty?

Fire up task manager (ctrl-shift-esc)
On the processes tab scroll down until you find Windows Explorer
Right-click on it and select restart

I have seen all sorts of other suggestions and solutions using google ... but this one worked for me

After the 30 day mark it is more complicated to get back to your previous version of windows but it is doable. If you don;t have a distribution disk then you can get it from https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/home. You will need your original windows licence number.
Hi Ken

I've had a look there but can't see any link pointing to Windows 7. they all seem to point to v10. What am I doing wrong?
Hi SS, strange? At the top there should be 3 graphics Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 7
The windows 7 takes you to https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/softwar ... d/windows7

I have a different URL somewhere that allows you to download Win7 and 8 without entering a licence key, these can then be burned off to create an install DVD/USB drive (you must enter the key after installing) ... I will have to try to find it ... not sure where I have put it (you know one of those that you think this will be very useful I will put it somewhere safe and it is so safe I can't find it)

Waaaaaaah, Windows 10 has mucked up the date settings in Excel. Easy thought I I'll reset the column to dd/mm/yyyy and it will be fine. No! The cell shows the date in that format but it actually sorts it on the American date system ...

Not sure that it is Windows 10 as such (it may be a setting in Win10). I have been using Excel in Win10 for some time (and been date sorting) and not had any problems.

I've got that problem too, I'm now on the American date system as well, but as I actually don't need to do official stuff on my computer I'm not too bothered, but I sympathise with you. :|

Got it sorted,at last. (didnt help that I'd put a load of data in & then went to sort it and it went all over the place and I took an age to find it!) I had to change two lots of date/language settings in Windows. Reaaly shouldn't have happened.

We've had that date issue, but we're on 7 Pro. It seems to be an issue with Orifice 365.

Meanwhile, back at home, I'm running Win 7 Home with Orifice 2003 on a laptop. Outlook works fine. However, on the desktop with either Home or Pro, Outlook won't run at all

Having tried the links very kindly provided by Ken, I was told by Microsoft that the code entered was specific to a manufacturer and I should contact them for a backup disk. Ho hum.

On the plus side, installing SP3 for Orifice 2003 has got that working at last, and switching the monitor connection from HDMI to RGB has got the game running

Not happy.

Having set up my laptop NOT to download KB3035585 ( the software that pesters you to download W10), I switched it on today for the first time since November and went to Windows Update to download any essentials. I was not impressed to find that, despite the KB being disabled, Microsoft are actually downloading and installing Windows 10. I'm only going to use the machine to control a DCC unit for a model railway, and the software is incompatible with W10 due to a bug introduced by Redwood's finest

We have had a couple of instances where a laptop has refused to work after a W10 update from W7 resulting in a full reinstall.

I hate Windows with a vengeance.

Did I mention that I hate Windows?

I am 'thinking' about installing W10, I currently run W8.1 (and I like it). My concern is that if I do go ahead and install W10, I might experience some 'interference' to the Office software which I purchased and currently have installed. In the old days if you bought Office, you got a disc or whatever to install/reinstall it, but in this 'modern' day and age it's done via the internet - and I am looking for some sort of guarantee or confirmation that going to W10 won't affect my Office installation. Currently I simply can't get a straight answer. SO - has anyone done the upgrade and lost Office? Cheers

I must admit that despite its bad press from some I've got used to 8.1 so I'm reluctant to update. The only incentive is it's free at present but in future they'll probably end support for 8.1 before 10 and then it'll cost. Decisions, decisions.

I'm resolutely sticking with 7. It works, and it does what I want, so I've got no need to change.

We've sent the laptop not to auto download any windows updates. We select the updates we require, and won't download anything relating to 10 or 10 nagware.

Well, after leaving it to do its thing, I came back to a screen asking me to accept or decline MS's T&Cs for W10. I declined. then it refused to run Update.

I can only speak for my self but my desk top was quite slow on some sites using windows 7 so I took the risk and downloaded windows 10 I can only say that the improvement has been tremendous much faster speeds and no problems so I will certainly be staying with windows 10 after all what is there to lose trying it as Stephen put a post in this subject telling you how to remove it if you do not like it.

MS must have done something to Win10 since my last brief foray into it - my original desktop is still there, Outlook 2003 doesn't crash and it recognises all my MP3 files. I'm still not happy that it forced me to install it though. It's too late to see if the Hornby DCC control works, so that'll have to wait for another day.

when I first tried to download windows 10 6 months ago I had no sound so followed Stephens method of going back to windows 7 waited 6 months and tried again this time all was fine no problems at all, but windows have done a lot of updates to 10 with in my opinion good results.

Hi Alan,

That's nice of you to ask, I 'think' it's Office 12 (I bought it about 9 months ago, and it's not a 12 month jobby). Sorry to be vague! T'other half says it might be called Windows Office Version 2013!

Many thanks. Hope you are well. Em.

Hi Em, I should have thought that, if Win10 stuffed it up, you'd be able to re-download it. However, from what I found last night, my installation of Office (2003) wasn't affected adversely, so you should be alright.

Where's Ken when you need him? Who's bright idea was it to let him go swanning off the State to work when his advice is required here???

Cheers Alan,

I was thinking of getting going with the upgrade a few weeks ago, and then other things got in the way, and I sort of forgot. So I'll back up everything to a spare (portable) drive and give it a go. What's the worst that can happen? Not much, except I'd probably have to get another copy of Office (really worst case scenario that), and rework a couple of spreadsheets. Oh well - looking on the bright side, at least if I had to do that it would stop me trecking around the shops looking for more clothes for the next holiday!!! OH might think that was a winning solution!
