Corked !

Unread post by gfwgfw »

Last night we had an excellent meal at a local Hostelry

Our meal was enhanced with an "joyous" bottle of Red Wine

The, oh so attentive Sommelier. as tradition has it

Poured just a little of the wine into Sirs glass

Thought it very amusing as the wine had the increasingly used screw top

I did ensure him my wine was OK and not "corked"

The look on his face told a thousand stories of Wine Snobbery

Am I right or am I right

The exercise is to be purely "Cork" related

Nothing less . . . . Nothing more

Do have a peaceful night in Hog land

"Off" as in infected with TCA fungus, this I believe can occur without a cork...

John

Now you are making it up to usurp the Giant

Come clean and except the Giant's Corked thread

. . . . is seriously spot on, oh yes it is

Grasping at straws . . . is a tad sad

BTW our little secret is filed in my vaults . . .

Your rural Dorset Neighbour

Beddy byes time, give Teddy a big Giant hug and do not forget to switch on Noddylite

Good night

Technically speaking a screw top wine can not become 'corked' since a 'corked' wine is caused by reactions of fungii within the cork with the chemicals used to sterilise and clean wine bottles. However there are many other similar 'contaminations' that can affect wine, including leaving the cork out/top off that are now commonly referred to as being 'corked' by inexperienced wine tasters.

So I am sure a good sommelier would recgnise the humour and either treat it as an amusing piece of reportoire (he hears every night) or with contempt. I do not understand the concept of pouring a little wine these days since the majority of people probably really just swig it around the mouth and gulp it down before saying it is OK .. maybe it is just one of those old traditions.

Pouring a little is a tad more civilised than sniffin' the cork

... but a Sommelier in Spoons is really cool

The point about tasting the wine first is that if it should be "off" then that is the time to get it sorted out before it is poured into everyone's glass - however these days with the majority of wine server in the "average" restaurant being mass produced then it is a rare occurrence to find a bottle that is "off".

If a wine in a bottle with a cork is off and is said to be "corked", is it safe to assume that a dodgy wine in a screw-top bottle is "screwed" ?!

Dear MOB

Like it

Though I must say that 'Spoons do have quite a few excellent wines on offer to accompany their signature dish - Faggots, Mushies and Smash

Hope all is well on your patch of rural Dorset
